Rosequartz

Entomb me in a chapel of rosequartz
for I need healing,
with incense at my head
for I need sleeping,
a pink tinged tomb
where I can find oblivion,
a dawnpink home
where I can rest my heart.

Just lose me in a chamber full of light
for I seek dazzling,
with candles all around
me in the night
for I need warming.
A safety zone
where I can hide in shelter.
A stalling place
until the time that I am strong.

Make sure you leave the door a little open.
A pillow sweet as saffron
for my head, a token.
A crystal goblet filled with water
in case I awaken.
A letter for my friends
in case I’m taken.

And when you call me at the dawn
I’ll try to answer.
I’ll pass through rosequartz columns
like a dancer
into your arms, if you are there to save me.
In love, enfolded I will be.
If you will take me.

The bat

little goblin-face
hanging up like an unfurled black umbrella.
Spread the webbed gabardine of your wings
and twitter your secrets to me.

*

Walking home on a summer evening

The black splat shape of the ragged rook.
The egg-smooth hoot of the owl sailing.
The skittering bat goes back and forth
as we walk up the deep dark lane.

High hedges make a secret path
cushioning the sides of our home journey.
A confetti of moths scatter in our wake
an escort for our returning.

The torch is abandoned, the night is so pretty
we follow our noses across the wide fields.
The stiles, we remember, old friends of great character
they will not trip us, help us up and over.

The footpath gleams softly, a light that is tracing,
more prominent to us when our eyes look away.
Don’t worry, don’t concentrate,
the soft evening guides us.
We hold hands on our doorstep at the end of the day.

*

Poetess
She gives good head, the poetess
because her mouth is full of poems
and her inspiration is love.
Words spill out of her when she comes.
Her breasts are a rhyming couplet.

The poetess is good in bed,
her pillows are full of soft vowels
and her eiderdown’s a sonnet.
“Make me rhyme” she says.
“Show me a good time”
(for her poems are not very good today.)

“Lay me on the blank sheet,
and write I love you
all over my pale skin.”
She says.
Her foreplay is a tidal wave of adjectives,
she holds the pen firmly,
she makes the page her own
and every time she makes love
it’s a poem.

incurable romantics

Are you an incurable romantic?

Do you need an escort when you go out

To prevent you falling prey to love?

Have you had counselling

For your love addiction?

Do they tell you

There’s no hope

Then pat you on the head and go?

Do you suffer from a form of Tourettes

That makes you shout

I LOVE YOU at the top of your voice

Til people, shocked by your behaviour,

Stand back and stare?

Are you tagged with a pink Love Heart

Around your ankle?

And is there a curfew to keep you safe indoors

When all the pretty girls go by?

Are you a Care in the Community Romantic?

Do social workers come to visit

And make you cups of tea

And try to talk you out of love?

Don’t listen sweetheart,

What do they know?

We romantics are so . . .

Vulnerable.

We give our hearts like others

Buy a copy of the Big Issue,

A little questioning then,

Yes! We know it’s the right thing to do!

We romantics have to stick together

So when the thought police come

I’ll get you out of room 101.

I’ll be like Emma Peel and

I’ll distract the guard

And meet you in our secret place.

I’ll wear a green carnation

So you‘ll know it’s me.

But please make haste!

For we romantics

Have no time to waste!

And as you well know

Love is all,

my darling,

Love is all!

Hello Ann, thank you for your comments on 'Stars' and 'High Tide'. I am also of course taking into account your question of the word 'obnoxious' in 'High Tide' I will try to think of a way to rephrase and will likely change it when I've decided on the alternative, most likely at a later date.

Hi Ann,sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, my new arrival arrived a mere 3lb 8oz, bless her but doing wonderful now, I am just about to look and see if the site is still as discursively apathetic as it was, there are so many intelligent and talented, and very opinionated people that frequent this site I was taken aback a little to see that discussion was a little lacklustre to say the least. Hope you are well, take care, Nicky.x

Ann, I happened to read your comment to Pete, about 'secrets' in poems. I think that is a superb way to express it: every poem IS a secret waiting to be unravelled by the reader. I think it is often just as much a 'secret' to the writer. What a great observation!

I'll try to tape another Russian romance and would like to hear your opinion. And the main point is: it's not the question of my voice but of the words in this or that romance. Hello Ann, yes the eye is a bit 'in your face' isn't it. Hazel is the colour, as near to my own as i could find. Green/brown.

Sorry you won't see it again though. I have decided to depart from the site. Keep up with your writing and keep on blogging. No-one can ever accuse you of not having a good comment to poem ratio. It shines from you how much you enjoy the site and interacting with others on here. You remind me of me when i first joined. Unfortunately, the buzz has died as well as the inclination to write.
Bye and thanks for looking in.

Hello Ann!Thank you for your comment on dandling the baby!I created the music 2 days ago (and the new on my profile) for a show I'm doing but thought they sounded rather daffy when placed with an image. Yes, the granddad does look like Hugh Gaitskel! I hadn't noticed till you mentioned it. And I absolutely love your audio piece -- it's beautiful, mesmerising, and there's something mysterious and ritualistic about it that makes it seem a tad threatening -- as in a kind of bewitching. All your work has the thrilling fizz of enchantment about it. xxxx

Hi Ann just noticed your comment on my blog entry ..Hopeful Recovery...Thank you so much for fighting my corner for me .At the time of the entry I was going through a relationship breakdown and was very emotionally charged which reflected in my poetry. I hadn't long joined WOL.and had already expressed that I was a novice.I looked up the person concerned's profile and it spoke volumes to me regards his character this did make me feel less upset but nevertheless I didn't submit any entries soon after that as at the time of reading that comment it really stung and knocked my confidence a little.I can now happily say that I am now over that period in my life hence I decided to try again this week and I am more than pleased at the positive comments that I have received so once again thank you...Bernadette x x

Hello Ann,
Cheers for reading and commenting on 'How To Fix A Broken Man'. I've replied in the comments section of the poem, but I'll also tell you here - the 'marine on the beach' line was something Darren wrote himself in the comments under the poem, I haven't edited the poem since first putting it up and that line was never in the poem. He's a sneaky one that Mr Thomas.

Glad you enjoyed it! Even if you read lines that were never there! x

A-very!-good morning to you Ann.Apart from your kind remarks on my school poem-your kindness and forgiveness blows me away! you REALLY are a loving person. And like myself, people could help themselves by taking a leaf out of your book-indeed!re comments on poems it is a shame when many brilliant poems blogged(IMO only)don,t get the recognition deserved. There again I think along the way, most are at least read which to me is sufficient enough. But when we comment on poems its wrong I think to expect the person in question to then feel obliged to comment on our poems. That would lose the quality of comments maybe? While it is nice to recieve comments,I think we,ll survive if not(don,t mean that nastily)after all its wrong of us to assume each of our poems are masterpieces(like I personally think ninety nine percent of yours are-sincerely!I love-all-the poems(every single one)on here,in their own way they add to inspiration do they not?but I would never-never-imply any of them being of lets say, lesser quality.Lets allow people to be able to improve, like myself,as we go along.Pardon the waffle, but I,m just trying to voice a fair opinion. Thanks for adding happiness to my day-the same must go to you, from me with many many thanks-Stefan.

Hi - Ann - yes I guess we should WALOP. Only problem being that people must email me with poems they feel worthy of nomination, for us then to all to vote on a winner. I have only had a couple of people do that so far. Do you have a list for me? If so, do email me... I will put a reminder up tomorrow. I guess Pandora's box may end up on two lists - but that doesn't matter, since the original idea was just a bit of fun.

hi anne. thanks for all your astute comments on my poetry.
regarding the frustration toward men who cant dance I completely relate. as a ballet dancer in my youth the competition for the usually only male dance partner was fierce and I developed a well honed skill of relating to gay men :) In irish dance the male dancer always won everything and given the best parts and treated like gods cos they were so rare...in swing roc or any salsa type classes women would snarl and fight each other with bitching if they had to share their husbands with excess girl dancers specially as men like to dance with me cos im good! although some men just get that ole thing 'id rather f*** my dog than dance with you' dont worry i dont actually have a dog;)but the best dance of all for me is the argentinian tango...i still dance it as its open to all ages and is the most sublime intuitive dance between partners. i was fortunate enough to claim the best looking, best moving man in the room. Clive...i miss him so but hope to meet up again at the next big milonga then sweep the room all caught up in the thrill of it all...ah.
i love that you write about dance x

Ta for your kind words, Ann. There was a pop song many moons ago that had a fade-out which included the lines "Keep on dreaming!" Wish I could remember who sang it.Maybe it'll come to me. * I prefer the romance of the north to the south. Mind you, I know there are plenty of windswept moors in the west country as well!

Hi Ann - MORE INFO - great poem - & I'm not just saying that because.....
BTW - nothing wrong with a little "doggy style" anyway if you get my drift :) Also - phosphorus for a hound of the baskervilles might have a certain "logic" anyway, because (pardon me if you know already) phosphorus glows in the dark - hence the name - so that'd be decidedly spooky at night seeing just 2 eyes bounding across the moors towards you !! I think that would certainly get MY attention :0

Hi Ann, it was an experiment. The picture is a self portrait by a friend and I stared at it for a while and wrote 'portrait' so it is purely about what the image said to me rather than the person in the painting. He is painting something inspired by one of my poems, so it will probably be a big miserable mess :-) thanks for your interest!

Ann - you are the marrying kind, just as I am unfortunately. The bit of paper that signifies a marriage isn't the important part; it is the committment to someone through thick and thin that constitutes a marriage - you had that. So did I, until life became truly untenable - it took me half a life time to give up on it though - more the fool me, perhaps. I do hope you find someone else to share your life with, whether that involves a bit of paper or not.

Ah! Marriage! The man I lost and I were never married Isobel. I think this poem just comes from how I feel seeing couples everywhere. They seem to be more in evidence around bank holidays! I don't think I'm the marrying kind. Miserable selfish old loner, that's me! ;-) Did try it once a million years ago. And I know that marriage is not a bed of roses etc. Maybe that's the trouble - I just want a bed of roses!!

How wonderful about the crow! I love all birds but especially corvids! And owls! I must confess that I bought an old taxidermy crow and a raven on Ebay. They are so beautiful and full of character. The raven dates from around 1910 and has a wobbly head! I hope this doesn't upset you or your crow, but I feel that I have given them a home here with me. One of them might appear in a poem tomorrow if I feel like it! xx

You are simply and beautifully ageless and timeless.
As for crows, well, one crow. I've a hand reared crow with a crooked beak. She had a severe chest infection and throat parasites as a chick -- they scarred her crop so she can't store food in it and we have to feed her till round 11pm at night in winter. Her crooked beak grows unwieldy twice a year and we hand feed her then, too. She didn't have wings for a year. just sort of stick things. Her feathers have recovered but she's stunted (due to the parasites). She was going to be put down by the vet but we persuaded him to let us take care of her. She can't go free because she'd starve and because she was so young when we got her that she thinks we are her parents. She's clever and playful and extremely gentle. She kisses my face and hands and hides her toys down my collar. A wonderful bird! So I smell of crow(s).

Hi Ann - I agree on reflection that there is something there that could be better. I like your version as well, but in that case I think that (somehow) it would need another syllable in line 4. I think I'll have to mull it over, but thanks for pointing it out. I must admit that quite a few people have in the past pulled me up over a change of tense in a poem (as if the tense MUST remain constant throughout) but I don't see why. Many of my poems are like the spoken word, or a conversation, so the tense may well drift as (say) it brings a past recollection into the present discussion. Anyroadup, I agree that I need to work on this one. Did you ever decide on your own "best" poems so I can see if they are as good for me as coromandel? all the best. B

that's very sad about your partner dying. my kick-start was similar but not as dramatic - we parted amicably as she wanted babies & I didn't - but it took me 2 yrs to get over it & was my one & only true "broken heart". I started writing some time later, still with a broken heart. I've since been very happily married these last 8 yrs but I still have the urge to write & I feel I've written better stuff since - so I wouldn't give up on it or assume that if you are happy your creativity will necessarily die. only my 2 cents :) B

Sun 4th Apr 2010 09:22

Hi again - a "dangerous" idea just came to me - why dont you send me what you think of as your best couple of poems & I'll see if (to me) they are as good/better than coromandel. we'd both have to agree in advance that you & I might not like the answers though? B

Banksy

Sun 4th Apr 2010 09:14

Hi Ann- I was going to ask this same question generally in "discussions" but I thought it might get too convoluted, plus, I was already pretty sure I knew the likely outcome - a hundred different opinions. Your ideas basically mirror my own, but it is difficult to know what to do. I've been published in a few printed chapbooks, comps & online, but often the editors dont publish the stuff that I sent as my best but usually one I threw in as an afterthought. I dont think it is a vanity to want to be published, to me it is more about some form of communication. The same thing also happens to the acknowledged masters - the Mona Lisa was not generally well-regarded when he painted it, but Leonardo saw it as his masterpiece as it's the only painting he took with him wherever he went. Now, we all recognise it as a true masterpiece. Without wishing to pile on the compliments, you are doing very well writing stuff like Coromandel if you are new to this - I dont think there is much that anyone on here could teach you about writing. but do YOU think coromandel is amongst your best stuff?? One of my best poems just popped into my head whilst I was driving - I pulled to the side of the road & scribbled it down ona bit of paper in about 30 seconds - it wrote itself really, all I had to do was record it - it was as if I hadn't really written it at all. anyway, thanks for answering my question that I am not alone in trying to tackle this mystery of what other people perceive as "the good stuff". all the best. B

Banksy

Sat 3rd Apr 2010 20:14

hi Ann - many thanks for the comments about "with hindsight". It's strange really though - I wrote all of these poems over the last 15 yrs & posted some of the ones which I thought were my best stuff - with very often little or no comment. Then by chance I posted a few on a totally different tack which were much simpler, easy to understand & these seemed to be better accepted, though IMHO they are not my "best" stuff. do you ever find the same? The one of yours which I included on my site - Coromandel - is sublime but didn't get any more comments than many lesser works by others. I've been aware of this quandary for many years - to the extent that I even wrote a poem on the subject.... but still, it's a mystery. Is it that others just don't "get it" or is it that some of us like Rossini & some like Abba - I just don't know. All I do know for sure is that it is wonderful when someone else does "get it" as we intended. all the best. B

Hi Ann, I'm glad you liked the Kingfisher poem. Final lines are very important, I think. I added the last line some time after I'd written the rest of it, and found that it had changed the meaning in some way - but that I thought it worked. Btw, I must say that I find the new profile picture quite distracting! I don't think you had been showing us the mud maid's best side before! Greg x

Hello Ann
Many thanks for your comments about "Yggdrasil". I've never thought my voice was terribly impressive but thankyou anyway. Probably like everyone else I thought it was rich and deep - until I heard it on a tape recorder and then this this thin, flat timbre comes out!
I have to confess I got the idea for the poem from reading the Bernard Cornwell Saxon Chronicles - a ripping good boy's read with lots of battles and fighting and more fighting and battles. I even poach completely the line about "weaving a darker cloth" which stands out a mile for its quality compared with the rest.
Anyway, once again, thanks for commenting.

Thanks Ann - and again also many thanks to any of you who may have clicked on a widget or link to this track on

Although the track on my profile page is the same as this - We havn't been promoting this track PANNING FOR VIBES [ music Conrad McQueen / words Rev.Two-Sheds ] but it has still risen another 69 places this week to no.40 in the 'OTHER' charts on reverbnation.com - so maybe the OTHER charts on reverbnation could have a poem at No.1 -
I have now been putting it about a bit [oooer missus] and also linking it to write out loud too .

Although you can obviously hear the track on this site - if you did click on the reverbnation link and played it there - maybe we could get a poem to be No.1 in the 'OTHER' charts on Reverbation

Conrad McQueen is in my top friends on

http://myspace.com/revtwoshedsmuzak

If you are a poet reverbnation.com is a good place to place recordings - I have 35 or so there - it is also safe there and you can use the widgets and stuff to post your songs on all different kinds of sites automatically, it is an easy site to use...

you can easily sign up to it by clicking onto my profile page there... have fun - record your words !

Thank you -- again! I meant to say, after you mentioned about the road accident themed restaurant piece that, yeay, I am a vegetarian. On the pip of being vegan. And, digressing wildly again, I am delighted you really like my whale mini-song. I've begun creating heaps of them, little audio moments that might be songs or something remotely musical. But they are a pretty new departure for me, more a leap into the dark/noise. I hear them in my head, get a bit obsessed with them, record them (messing with my voice). I really can't tell you how encouraging it is that you like them so much. But how sad to have a dead whale on the beach -- I couldn't have helped carry its bones (too squeamish/weepy and my own bones are going somewhat awry and seem skittish about carrying me around, so I'm considering creating an ex-skeleton or bamboo body scaffolding). I'd have been blubbering my eyes out (oh no, what a terrible pun). It seems right that the local museum should preserve some of it, but mightily suspect that people would take lumps of its bones home as garden features. I also sponsored/adopted a whale called 'Sod'. Yes, it was really called, 'Sod.' I thought, yes, I have been thought of in similar terms by some people, so I shall stand up and be counted as a friend of 'Sod.'

Hello! How lovely of you to comment on my oddments. Thank you so very much. Not sure how they emerge or why or from where, but they do. And 'pique freans' and pique-a-knees, and Little Bo-Pique, pique and mix, piquenic are all dancinf to the muzak of time. 'Pique' is hurt pride, dented vanity, a moment of sharp ego-puncture. "Pique' is misused a lot at the moment, usually by being lumped into the phrase 'It piqued my interest/my interest was piqued.' And my quick brown decaffeinated urban fox jumped out of my daydreams. Hey -- your poems are incredibly vibrant and wowser. You seem to be able to flit from joyous comedy/tongue-in-cheekiness to pastoral melancholy. What a range! They're flipping fab.

A month will fly by for you Ann - it will drag dreadfully for me. I have tried to do this quietly before but it didn't work. If I do it publicly I might stick to it - I'd look a bit of an arse if I snook back on in a week's time! I think I will end up living in a tidier house and will hopefully write more poetry - we'll see...
I don't think you are arrogant for wanting to leave your poetry as is BTW. It is always a difficult balance - once you open yourself up for crit - it can become a total free for all and you wonder just where the original poem went to. There is a thread for people to post work that they want crit on - no-one seems to use it though.
Take care and continue having fun!

Hi Ann, thanks for your comment on 'Mona without Lisa.' :-)

I see where you are coming from when you say the last stanza isn't perhaps necessary. I was messing around with an idea when i wrote it and as Andy says, it is multi-layered.
Too many layers to actually describe as i see them and others might see something completely different so on this occasion, i'm sorry but i'll have to leave you guessing or wondering what it is about.
The title in itself is suggestive ie; what if? Would the painting have been any different if it had simply been called Mona? How many times was it stuck in a corner before being worked on again? and if it had included more detail or colour would it still have become a masterpiece? Did it start out as a sketch or even a poem before before becoming a painting?

So many questions and yet who really knows the answer and what becomes of it. Maybe the artists themselves were flabbergasted in that just one of a million drawings would become so famous and yet to them it had so many faults and might only have been done on a whim and painted in a day or less. :-)

None of this really explains my poem and i doubt for a second it will become a masterpiece but the last stanza has to stay for all the reasons above. Not all readers of poetry are academics or write poetry, just as not all appreciators of art can paint but we all have imagination :-)

Thanks for your comment, Foxy. May I call you that?! I can hear Bob Dylan himself singing your Valentine's Blues song, save perhaps the tickling feet line. I reckon these words would easily fit around 12 bar blues. You should get together with a musician and perform it as a spoken word piece. Get a little riff going. Buy a cigar just for the occasion. And be sure to wear your heart on your sleeve.

I've just noticed the audiofile; I'll check it out.

Hi Ann, thanks for your response.
I'm a dog, like a faithful Labrador, loyal and a little too trusting sometimes which causes me all kinds of inner turmoil but as i grow, i'm becoming more accepting of who i am and a bit less accepting of those who would take advantage of my good nature and generally take the p**s. :-)

My whole outlook on life has changed very recently and i'm enjoying the changes so my poem does reflect that for my Chinese symbol.
The ''element'' does make a difference to characteristics in an individual. Some of the websites you look up only ask for the year of birth but the date and month gives a more 'in-depth' and i feel, more accurate assessment.

The poem was written purely as an exercise for me to practice writing in a more technical fashion. Not sure if anyone has noticed that or simply don't want to comment on the technical aspects. I can't blame them really. I've given them all some flack in the past on here. :-)
I wrote a piece which has a more spiritually guided influence but it wouldn't be suitable for this website as it isn't poetry.

Hi Ann,

Thank-you for the tip. I'm not sure how that works. Here is a poem for you to read.

Carrying you

There is an eternity in that hand
when your fingers wrap around
the shakier experience of mine.

You feed, stop, smile, and look
so new into the old corrupt world.

You look into our eyes and just
register above the moon of food.
Your mother’s breast glides you
punch-drunk through the waves
of her nourishing milk-ocean.

The feast strengthens, empowers,
the great quench ennobles us all.

We are your parents, the well
that nourishes you, you disarm us.

We look at those small moments,
a mosaic-microcosm of you,
and we relish the tiny achievements.

Each step of development, we go
with you in awe of the wondrous,
of the greatest goal, of the banal.

And our prize is your smile,
the scent of your wisp of hair,
the touch from the minute
in those hands already creased,
folded for the toil ahead of you.

Our burden is to lessen the load
on your soft back.
We carry you happily
in the embrace of hope.

I paint with you in my arms.
I paint the future and carry you with me.

Hi Ann

You shouldn't feel a wuss. Everyone feels self-pity sometimes. The question is whether one embraces it, and it doesn't feel like you do - or you're hiding it well if you are. Your poems just seem to say "This is how it was and that is how I feel/felt" and they usually do it skilfully and sensitively which people appreciate very much

Hi Ann Now you're talking. Of course I know that one. As you can tell from the poem I was addicted to Solid Air. I remember that I had this tape I made with Solid Air on one side and Bless the Weather on the other. It really was a tired loop of tape because I didn't have a lot of music in France and I must've played that tape thousands of times. There was a point where I'd had enough of being over there and I played and played The Man in The Station, doing my John Martyn drawl to the bit where he sings 'I'm catching the next train hoooooome'. I also love the later track Serendipity and was quite please with myself for getting it into the poem. If you catch up with the YouTube footage it's devastating. The recent biography is a great tread and sort of inspired me to write the poem in the first place.

I feel that very strongly when with my ancient grandma, she speaks quite strong Lancashire Dialect which can be hard to understand for non-speakers. I am trying hard to keep using some of her words..especially in poems actually, so that they might continue. Thank you for your kind comments on Spinerette. You are correct, spiders are possessed of spinneret's, but the one in my poem although being posessed of some of the attributes of these fascinating little organs, is not one of them. She is someone who draws out silk in her own way...I think she is from Cornwall..or Brittany...a Celt of the ancient race of which the two countries are connected. Thanks again,Debz xx

Thanks again for your considered comments.
The word 'eutectic' comes primarily from the realm of 'physical chemistry' and is about boiling points and melting points of compounds and mixtures...that was the first clue....but I wouldn't expect most folks to get that one...I took out a whole verse about how I had to bite the line through and consequently ended up rather close to his tearful face...which was how come I could taste his tears and his breath (he always smelled of sherbert...his gran ran the local sweetshop!). When I took out that verse it suddenly became just funny...rather than funny/sad/longing/...Ho Hum.

I have no problem with funny...just was aiming a bit higher...or lower. :)

Back to the drawing board. Thanks (as always)

:)

Glad you enjoyed 'Martin'. Thank you. Sadly (it is a true story) we never went fishing together again. No-one seems to have mentioned the homo-erotic subtext...which is a shame as I wrote it to submit as my final piece for the OU course I've been doing. I've obviously edited it too hard and removed the tension and longing from it. There was a verse where I bit through the line and brushed his cheeks with my lips...but that was just tooo flaming obvious. When I removed it it turned into a comic piece in a flash. It had sounded rather tender up unitl then.
Glad you liked it though. It's still a poem!

Re Your comments on the audio on 'On Seeing A Boy's Face'Glad you liked it Ann. I have used it before (as has garside if I remember rightly) It is derived form an onlne piece of software that converts text to speach. You may need to spell words differently to get the voice to pronounce the words as you want them however and alter gaps and pauses etc. I used it here because I felt the faltering awkwardness and non human remoteness of this voice reflected the difficult subject I was writting about. It is a voice without empathy or opinion. Win

Do you mind the fact that everyone always assumes that the poems we write are based on ourselves? This is such a strong, personal poem, but you could have invented the scenario. I feel that I'd like to write a poem and leave it open as to whether it is based on me and my experiences. If you write a novel about a mass murderer, people don't assume you are a nmass murderer. Or is it that poetry is always a sort of truth? Don't know. lotsoflove ;-)
Ann, couldn't agree more with your comments above posted on Rachels blog entry... thats what poets do isn't it? If people assume you are writting from personal experience then thats a bit of a leap surely? Win

Helloooo,
re your question about the reader assuming the poems are autobiographical, I don't particularly mind. It does feel a little exposing but it's my choice to post them on here isn't it? I admit some of my poems are autobiographical, some aren't, some of the things I write about happened to people I know but not to me personally. I think readers will always assume there's a back story themselves anyway whether that's poetry or prose. I really appreciate your thoughtfulness in asking me that by the way.

Thanks Ann for looking in on my profile page.
The wren was a very enterprising little bird that rode on the eagle's back until it got too tired to fly any higher. So although some would praise her for tenacity and cleverness, enduring the trial issued to her, others would say she cheated. The thing i love about the wren is that she doesn't gloat. She simply goes her own merry way with grace and humility.

Good evening Ann

Thank you for having a read of my stuff. I'll give blogging a go sometime yes.

I wasn't sure whether it was justanotherspaceforapoem or a place to subject WoL poets to the minutiae of my rather insignificant existence. I think it is the former.

Fortunately... for all of us!

Have a great tunesday

Dear 'quiet widow'
Hospital; Bereavement; Ghost House? catharsis?

My/our old house is let, and I don't want to even look in the window.

Beautiful poems though.

Ann
I keep making a resolution that I won't even look at Discussion groups; then I think "ok, I'll just risk one eye" and then, before you know it, you're sucked back in.
I shall resolve to keep my resolve.

ps
I neither smell of oil/engines, nor am I able to put one foot in front of the other. What chance I?

Hi Ann
In entering the Discussion forum, I hope you are aware that, under H&S guidelines, you have to wear fire retardant under-garments.
There is often some of the most personally vitriolic c**p posted, claiming to be 'discussion', that there are some (I mean me and at least one other) who will no longer join in.
I wish you a joyous journey thru the WOL site

Steve M.
p.s. I don't smell of oil and engines (just thought I'd mention it) ;-))

Hi Ann. Thanks for your comment on my poem 'Patience'. I've only just come across your profile. Really like the Dancing Men poem. Portrays stereotypical men. We're not all like that though - but I do like Wickes (and B&Q, and Focus). Bugger.........maybe we are.

Good morning Ann

I enjoyed the dancing poem and the array of gentlemen that abound in it v much. The descriptions are clever, believable and familiar. I recall 'wearing' a pencil behind my ear once (for emergency villanelle-writing-on-the-bus you understand) and someone assuming I'd be good at carpentry! I can't even put up the Christmas Decorations let alone shelves!

It's a great poem Ann and there are a lot of great observations in it. I think Goethe appreciated the dance just as much:

Please send me your last pair of shoes, worn out with dancing as you mentioned in your letter, so that I might have something to press against my heart. ~ Goethe

look forward to reading more of your stuff.

Hi Ann,
Thanks for the kind comment. i think in that picture- i'm pausing before the blank page, frozen in fear. i may have been stood there for several minutes. either that or i'm getting a coffee.
I like the repetition in your poems. I see desire and nature are the same here. Do you read much Ted Hughes? i felt a lot of him when I read your poems.
Thanks.

Dear Ann,
thank you for commenting on my poem -you have seen the heart of it....I struggled with the word "Un-amputatable for a while , trying several others , but used it because it's an ugly word and when you think of someone you have loved and still love and wish you could see,but can't, it hurts and you could in one act brutal cut off that wish so it would no longer be painful...then, the longing returns with the pleasurable memory...that's love.Loved your 'dray' and thanks for bringing the smell of swarfega to mind...in that tender ,dancing poem...hmmm, your poems are so gentle ...it makes me realise how hard-edged a lot of poems are...hmmmm somethign to ponder..

Hi Ann, thanks very much for your comments on Sandy Denny and Andy Williams. I suppose I'm wistful only in the sense that she died far too young. I do agree that Who Knows Where The Time Goes is a wonderful song, and there are so many others too. Originally I had the idea of writing a whole sequence of poems about musicians I admired, but these two were as far as I got! Maybe when I take the redundancy ... Greg x

Hello Ann, I am sorry for your loss, there are so many people writing on here, its difficult to know someome until perchance they enter your consciouness, I thought 'Why can't I find a man who can dance?' lovely in its totality, yes you are right men do smell of oil and engines ;-)) we are all the same, I drill for the damn stuff. ha ha We seldom get time to dance, too busy being crushed by the wheels of life and it's obligations.
Keeping on dreaming and being you ;-)

Hi everyone!Hello Christopher. It's interesting that you enjoyed the first bit of my dancing men poem. I like the last bit, think the first bit is a meant-to-be cliche, and the two lines that join them are a bit rubbish - don't flow, too clunky, unless you say them in the right rythmn! I wrote the poem as a love letter to practical, scruffy, unassuming anorak type men, ( I used to work surrounded by them, in a previous existance) and the bit I think works for me are the last two lines. Or maybe the last three words!

I need a man who'll dance with me.
We'll meet in moonlight and I'll wear
a green gauze gown with pearls and opals in my hair.
He'll love me straight away, he'll be entranced
and then we'll dance.

I need a man who'll dance with me
and without effort he
will lift me up as in our mutual joy we twirl.
He'll write me poems, give me flowers perchance
and then we'll dance.

Enjoyed that, embraced it, so seldom can, good stuff!

Can we just leave it there though.

C.

Hello Dave - many thanks for your comments - er... have I spelt lie wrong? Have I made my poem more deep and meaningful - if so - must have done it on purpose! Wracking my brains to work out what else I've spelt wrong - or should that be racking? Thanks again, xx

Oh yes! I see what I did!
