Second Sonnet
When you behold the shimmering stars at night,
You ask if all that beauty’s in your eyes,
You close them, pensive; here within my sight,
Your form so exquisite provokes my sighs;
That hawthorn flowered path on which we walk,
Has scent that’s just as sweet before we meet,
Those songs without words in each precious thought,
Become enchanting music when you speak,
All truth is on these lips I can’t resist,
And in these eyes I see a heavenly fire,
‘But where is beauty? show me’, you insist,
Entwined within your arms I am inspired;
I know that beauty’s in the stars above,
Where soars my heart; it’s here, and here, my love.
Third Sonnet
The Taliban of Christianity,
Are guardians of our nation’s moral health,
Protecting men from femininity,
They worship pomp, and privilege, and wealth.
They disapprove of how and whom we love,
Deny our civil right to earn a crust,
To work in schools for our Lord above,
Those bigots trample freedom in the dust.
No paedophiles then, in the Church of Rome?
In Opus Dei, no adulterers?
No thieves bank-rolling your Papal throne?
No blessing Tony Blair the warmonger?
Make love, not war; here’s to these sacred three,
Freedom, Equality, Fraternity!
Dreamtime
Once, crossing the Iberian plain,
I saw all shimmering in prophetic light,
The regal star a dancing round
The soaring silver crescent moon,
And, far below, I stood in sight
Of great Alhambra’s mighty gaze,
In fretting Andalusian night
Of seven heavens all in one.
That winter chilled my very soul,
But, came across the sands of time
A son of Allah, bless his name,
Who saw his brother’s need, and shared,
Just as the holy book us showed, his coat,
Companionship, the gift of tongues.
Who are they who say we may
Not break our bread with whom we wish,
Nor ever take another’s hand,
Suspecting children never free
To laugh, and shine like twinkling stars ?
Let us embrace the millions now,
A wealth of love is ours and theirs.
Now stand aside the thief of time !
We’ll seize this moment heaven sent,
Here, take this hand, this heart, this prayer,
Aspire to peace, elusive word,
A swallow’s flight a breath of air.
So may a simple yes suffice,
Say yes I will, for pity’s sake.
Let such as you and I, with faith
The mark of courage overstep,
Lest unsaid words and deeds undone
The innocents betray once more,
And leave us broken hearted in the past.
I pray the the orange blossom mingle
With the emerald green below,
Here in the warm and here and now,
This kiss is for the whole wide world,
Encircling arms will hold us fast,
And closer now than midnight is,
O shining dreamtime dawn of peace.

We worship the Unholy Trinity,
Our Gods of War demand child sacrifice,
Fresh blood must flow for all eternity,
Wide eyed and shiny booted they’re enticed.
Before the altar of Church, State, Arms Trade,
The top-brass gleam in searing summer sun;
Smart ranks of little darlings on parade,
Think: ‘daddy’s war must have been so much fun’.
If they should die, think only this of them:
You bought the lie, admired death’s bloody wares;
Pomp, circumstance, grave-sounding holy men,
Groomed them for death upon our town-hall squares.
Roll up, roll up, play with the field gun:
Its shiny barrel can make death such fun.
