Biography

Published in several well known poetry magazines/ezines and on websites like this one.
Also have one collection published in hard back on quality paper...
and if you believe all that you'll believe anything... We are allowed to dream and set goals aren't we?
Even if the probability is years ahead?

I've been writing for approximately three years. Most of my poems are written after meditating and so i believe those are spiritually guided and often have a deeper meaning than at first glance.
I have recently ventured into attempting meter based on reading my new love's book. Stephen Fry might be my new love but the relationship cannot possibly work but i'll keep playing with him from time to time until i either master some of the techniques necessary for my purposes or it becomes too tediously boring...

and there you have my current status. I'm a Wiganer by the way and proud of it.
I can be seen brazenly flaunting my unpolished work in blogs and i update my samples regularly. I also enjoy commenting on other poets work though don't expect constructive critique from me. I tend to comment mostly on the content, feelings and imagery etc...

I welcome kindness in comment, even in constructive comment. I thankyou.

In The Dark, I Wonder...

Posted on Friday 12th March 2010 12:08 pm

This was inspired by the discussion topic about ''dark'' in poetry. It reflects some of my understanding of it.

I look at you and I wonder

Can you read my mind?

In the twi-light hours

I hear your voice and I wonder

Do you know our souls connected?

Are you consciously aware of the things

you tell me about your secret depths of despair?

and do you know that I remember it

when daylight strikes?

and you say ''I wasn't there''

and as you walk away from me, I wonder

I wonder... are you messing with my mind?

Thanks Janet -sorry I didn't respond earlier-computer's been off the run for some maintenance work. Was a bit worried about using 'behold' -a bit archaic,but wanted to refer to the question;
is beauty in the eye of the beholder? Congrats on getting published, I really should make the effort to read more of other people's work.

thanks Janet - I'm glad you enjoy the audio - I prefer audio too, again most of it is very long, can't seem to hone it down without losing the meanings [for me at least] eg Stalag Avalon runs at 50 minutes at a reasonable pace of speech [oooer eh?] - audio I think it is certainly the direction I'd prefer to go in [with the text printed alongside and so on as y'do]... probably going to start printing chapbooks at some point and if i do i think that each will also probably have a CD. I appreciate how hard it can be to follow longer poems my attention span is also not ver

Thanks for your beautiful comment on my latest Janet - I was nervous about posting it cos I didn't think I had managed to express quite what I wanted to - it not being a genre I'm used to... I'm relieved that people liked it.

I can't get used to your new profile pic - all icy and cold - it's so not you! xx

I read twice in your profile the word 'constructive,' plus our conversation in the week. What is it about less-than-constructive criticism/critique, which so frightens you? I think you should allow people to air their opinions, even if you disagree with how constructive they are. What is not tolerable, however, is inadaquate, vulgar, criticism. But there's lots of space for the other stuff...

Fri 19th Feb 2010 14:53

I always enjoy your comments, Janet.
In any sincere spiritual experience I think that both fear and joy are present, the order being important. I so respect the phrase 'the fear of the Lord' as cogently translated into 'unknowable Love of the Lord'. And, of course, the 'loving heart' can weep for anything, including the extremity of joy. Communion is completely open to personal interpretation. Every single word has many facets of meaning; which doesn't make it obtuse, just adaptable.

John Turner

Wed 17th Feb 2010 09:12

Very much agreed on the points of criticism when written down. Likewise, 'texting' is the worst way to communicate when trying to impart an important message - texts are often lacking in tone and general context. Better would it be to send short recorded message files, like mp3, (ready to play instantly) in addition to voicemails when the other person's not available. I know my last relationship suffered due to textitus! Thankfully, poetry is many more levels higher than: cu l8r m8.

John Turner

poet image

Tue 16th Feb 2010 21:22

There has to be some element of give in take to criticism. If you are prepared to open up to an audience, then you need to accept some may very well not like any number of things about your material. It's nice getting a pat on the back but I'd rather have a slap in the mouth if there was more point to it, rather than merely, 'yeah, great poem.' Your comments are perfectly valid, but as I sometimes do take comments the wrong way; I also deliberate about how meaningful they are, your point got me thinking. Sometimes people have no idea what they're talking about when they feedback, and sometimes they do. But in a literary sort of way, analytically speaking, there is a school of thought that says that not even the author/writer can enforce the meaning/intent (etc) of his/her own poem once its 'out' there. Likewise, comments may be as constructive or as destructive as the content of the poem itself. Just some thoughts.

No-one is ever perfect Janet - we are all learning. It has been brought to my attention that my Iambic Pentameter is out on 3 separate lines - being 9 syllables rather than 10! Shock, horror - I will have to sort that out at some point. The 11 syllable lines don't count cos they have weak feminine endings and Stephen Fry says that is ok LOLI do wish I could write more - so much of my stuff I end up discarding - just need a bit more staying power and a few less kids!
I do hope you will start coming to some venues soon - haven't seen you in ages....

ps you've got me wondering what your 'dog like' instincts are. Last time I walked my sister's dog on the Beacon one tried to pee on my daughter's leg - another was mounting my sister's dog.... fess up Janet....

Hi Janet - Chinese New Year - I was totally inspired by your poem to write my poem, so thank you! I enjoyed yours and I loved writing mine! I looked up a website and found out that someone I like is a rabbit! I knew I was a dragon, now I find I am a water dragon, they are more thoughtful and less dangerous apparently! My poor partner who died was a metal tiger - it would have been his year I guess. It is he who sits and growls quietly in my poem! What are you? Seeing the descriptions on the website I found them to be very accurate except for my son who is the exact opposite. But he was born 2 weeks late - induced - maybe that changes things? xx

Hi Janet Thanks for taking the time to read the poems and leave a comment. Glad you liked the poem about Ned Maddrell. The other one does perhaps require a bit of a history lesson. In the Middle Ages in France there were 2 related but distinct languages in the North and the South of France. When the Albigensian heresy took hold of the southern half of the country it was a great excuse for the northern barons to come south and slaughter anyone whose land they wanted. That's why everyone in France speaks the French they do and hardly anyone has heard of Occitan. Similar kind of history drove Irish into the wilds and near extinction.

Hi Janet - I too almost always write a poem in one go, then think it might be better if I spent ages fiddling. It doesn't seem right that it can only take a few minutes to write a poem, but I think they are in our heads for hours, months, maybe years before they pop out! Also, I may get great feed back and interest on a poem I felt I hadn't put much effort into, then a more thoughful poem doesn't strike a chord with anyone really. But we carry on!

Thankyou for your lovely comment on Camel and I. I have visited your poems and particularly like Oak and the Mining for Gold as I think I could be an archaeologist in a parallel universe. But actually the one that gives me most pleasure is getting into the bath saying the Neptune meets Venus poem, have you tried that!! best wishes, Janex
