Biography

In early 2008 I decided to start doing what I wanted to for a long time but never got round to for one reason or another! Some of my work reflects some bad times and several people have needed counselling after reading it. However, dont be perturbed, please read on...

My work is about things I am passionate about or written from personal experiences. On the brighter side, I like to entertain, not holding house parties, but exploding into a rant and tirade of words, feeling and poetic licence that I hope is a bit different!!

I like to include music - I have spent all my life if not longer going to gigs - I now watch lots of local gigs/bands - Paris Riots, Hayley Faye Band etc. The Clash are my heroes and I also support lots of local punk bands and have supported TV Smith (The Adverts), and Sex Pistols Experience.

I'm also part of a promotions team Half Evil - www.myspace.com/halfevilbolton - we organise poetry and acoustic gigs. As MC Jeffarama!, I usually compere.

GIGS!!! - 2010 - STOP PRESS!!

Buskin 4 Beer - Thanx to all for support!!!!

Sunday 21 March - Howcroft Bolton WOL - MC Jeffarama @ your service!

Friday 26 March - Alma Inn - Bolton - Hayley Faye Band, Starecat, Juke box heroes & MC Jeffarama!

Saturday 27 March - the Crescent Salford - Starecat and more tba & MC Jeffarama!

Saturday 19 June - Jeffarama! Live - supp Out of Town - Frankies Bar - Darwen

Saturday 31 July - Jeffarama! Live - supp Last Gang in Town - Red Admiral - Runcorn

November 2010 - John Cooper Clarke CD launch - Salford

Thanx to everyone who supported us with Buskin 4 Beer!!! - Will be back on tour this summer - Jammin' with Jeffarama!!!!!

I do most local poetry nights and did well in recent slams. I also enjoy doing gigs so if you want me to do a turn at an event or gig get in touch! 07984 197175 - Thanx for your support, Jeffarama! X

There has to be hope

When I was a lad
they said things were okay,
we were safe on our own
- safe to go out and play.

But as I grew up
things changed for the worst,
you had to be on your guard
- get your punch in first.

Now there's no respect
the country's a mess,
the police force can't cope
- but they're doing their best.

Where's it all leading?
it's not safe now at night,
don't go out on the town
- you'll end up in a fight.

Now the mother's on heroin,
the kids are on dope,
the fathers a drinker
and no-one can cope.

So what for the future?
now suicide is rife,
a siren in the distance
- another battered wife.

And now the kids don't care,
it's bad news all the time,
a rape or a murder
- I hope it's not mine.

And now the kids are on heroin
the teachers can't cope,
but in all this mess
there just has to be hope.

Fighting on

I'm back at the start
the same place I know
do not collect two hundred
do not pass go

I can't change the past
mistakes set in stone
no-one deserved that
so I'm best on my own

My constant neglect
all too commonplace
the inevitable regret
written across my face

If I let it beat me
I'll crash and burn
but to that dark place
I can never return

Daily reminders
topping up the pain
is this my punishment
forever to remain?

I have to fight on
it's all that I know
let my old life fade
let the new one grow.

Glastonbury - No More!

It sneaks up on you like Wimbledon
it's that decision time of year
the annual Glasto pilgrimage
is drawing very near!

Time for you to root out
all your scruffy gear
get some grub from Asda,
and stack your van with beer!

But this year I hung my boots up
I decided to be a bore
Glasto, Reading, the V-fest
I couldn't be arsed anymore!

Computer registrations
150 quid and Government ID
it's easier to join the CIA
or the bloody KGB!

Coldplay, warm beer
I think I've seen it all
drunk or stoned revellers
- wearing bugger all!

No more chemical toilets
and hangovers from hell
no more oceans of piss
and no more rancid smell!

So I listened on my radio
and lay there in my pit
I didn't feel the need to wade
through this year's river of shit!

That must have been another day

My struggle dies with the winter sun

I'm considering the rest of my life

In more ways than you will know

I'm fortunate to be alive

Experienced my fair share of setbacks

but I never really handled things right

if I was the keeper of a shop

it would be the one that sells you hindsight

No need to run now from those demons

it's best to take things in my stride

acceptance is a precious gift

it stops me going out of my mind

Contentment, life and freedom

are things that help to keep me sane

dignity now triumphs over excuses

yeah, that must have been another day.

Hey Jeff, thx kindly for the feedback on my poem Spirits New Haven.

Hope you are well and all is good.

You were missed at Middleton.

I am hoping to get to the next Howcroft after numerous past abortive efforts.

I hope to catch you there in good poetic spirit.

Thanks for the comments Jeff...I know what you mean about the choppy lines in Stockings, I've been doing much shorter lines of late so it might get a revision at some point.....or I could start wearing ankle socks! :)

Hi Jeff,

I've looked back on my poem Nearly Love and agree with your suggestion and altered the line.

The poem has only had one reading so far, so I can go with the amended version for future readings

Thx

Hi Jeff - Posted on Chris' 'Nearly Love' poem -
Well 'Serial' can be 2 syllables, or rather emphasised parts (Can't remember the technical term) Yes I also like the extra HAS for the reason Jeff says and you could have this and keep the sylable count in my version (just). Win

Jeff, thanks very much for liking Don't Look Away. It's one of what I would call my postcard poems, ones I work away on in the hotel room in the early morning when my wife is still asleep. I think it has a lot in common with your atmospheric poem Napoli, particuarly looking at the picture. I also like The Journey of Your Life, because I'm a sucker for trains and stations. They just provide moments of such great drama, of life-changing movements, of reunion and separation. Best wishes, Greg

Hi Jeff
Had been intending coming over for Sunday, but having seen the early start; the guest spot; the quiz; the music, and thinking there'll be a large turnout, with open-mic in first half only, I'll be staying at home.
Have a good time

Good evening Jeff

I would just like to say how inspiring I found your 3 sample poems. I have to confess to sharing the views in the Glastonbury one particularly. At the point when freedom from the machine became a weekend going TO the machine, like you, I chose the radio. Some great truths in your poems.

not perturbed at all!

Ha what a shit like dive of foul cow turd pie..yuk. watching people get shitfaced and roll around in cow shit is not my idea of fun either. fuck glastonbury! parties in a cow field can be fun however but make sure you dont get crushed in a stampede or anger some big bull. portable ghetto blasters are a must for easy jumping over hedges ;)

Hi Jeff, thanks for the comments, I can see there is a lot of honesty in your writing too and I can hear the punk influence in your samples! I enjoyed 'cemetery gates' - lots of vivid images and plenty to reflect on. I was put in mind of a sign described on the radio recently in a cemetery 'placing flowers on the graves in no way benefits the dead'. I'm curious to know what they are lining up for in your poem? Is this a suggestion that there may be an afterlife?

hi jeff,

thanks for your feedback- i always like to hear what other poets have to say about my poems.
I like your style too it is a little like mine in that you like it to rthyme (is that how you spell it?) it is never deliberate.

I am afraid I do not have enough attention to detail to change wonder for wander- although I wish i had. Just bad spelling on my part I think.

I like your poem darker skies and the bit about just another baby to add to the list. It reminded me of this baby p business and how there are 30 kids a week dying at the hands of negelgent carers but they never make the press and no one knows about them. A tragedy.

Anyway on that happy note.

Hope to see you at the green room sometime. Cheers Emma

Jeff - good suggestions re my geography poem. However - ha ha - I have answers. Yes, Queensland is no country, but I had to use the 'land' rhyme to fit the rhyming scheme, so Qatar wouldn't have done. I too am a geography buff and used to know all the capitals. Did you see the news recently about a two year old girl who has learned most of them already?!

Yep, see you on Saturday!

Hey Jeffarama! Cheers for checking my stuff - loved you at bolton poetry slam - hope to come to more bolton stuff soonio.

I do found it interesting that everyone seems to comment on the poem (That you commented on which is Binge on whinge) as I find this to be my most laziest and ...(to use the technical term) crappest poem : D But yet everyone seems to like it.

Nevertheless - I like to many of yours to name! Keep at it - hope to see you soon! Youre one of boltons finest xx

Hi Jeff, thanks for your comments about Re-awoken. You are dead right about using "for" instead of "to" and in fact it said that on the original handwritten version.

And yes it does suffer a little from cliches. Seems that "being in love", being something of a cliche itself, causes an overdose of cliches. I can see I may have a bit of a battle against them or I could just embrace them and do something fun with them.

Anyway Jeff, thanks

Jeff, you always take the time to read our work and I'm happy to see you developing in your confidence and writing. I enjoy your work especially because of your musical passions. I am more inspired by good song lyrics than poetry, but then I think good song lyrics are poetry. I think that quality musicians and bands have a lot going for them in terms of poetic influence. Take Roger Waters for example.

Thank you for your kindness and sincerity and understanding.

I did think that the ZXombie poem was rather short, so thank you for confirming this for me.

I really like your poems, keep up the good work.

Alreet Jeffo... Sunday was a good night. Nay, Sunday was a fine night and one to be recorded in the annuls of WOL folklore.
As far as tribute bands go - I'm afraid I don't do tribute bands. As good as they are, they're not the real McCoy. The Stanglers are inimitable. If I heard a tribute band I wouldn't be able to get the concept of 'Jive Bunny' or 'Stars on 45' out of my head.
It's the boys themselves or nothing for me. If you're going in October/ November let me know. I usually get to a couple of gigs in and around the North West. Although Dublin would be a good one?

Somewhere outside Tokyo invented time.
Someone with a million watches invented time...
