Catharsis in Poetry
All mine are about me and none are. One needs a measure of objectivity - the ability to stand outside one's narrow perspective and try to place the protagonist into a 'universal' situation with which others can empathise.
I see lots of performers more or less abreacting their own private experiences but in such a way that they are closed to any reader/listener outside that immediate experience.
A lot of therapy goes on at poetry open mics - a lot of catharsis - perhaps too much - there was one guy (a local) who spent 3 years at the same open mic venting his anger at his former wife after the divorce. Arguably a shade too cathartic.
I found out yesterday that the inspirer of a few of mine - my first lover - died of cancer that morning - so I changed my script to celebrate her in the poems - not cathartic perhaps but it made me feel better and I'm sure she winked her approval.
