J D Salinger - Requiscat In Pace
I first read 'The Catcher in the Rye' when I was a teenager growing up in Wigan. It's a most poetic novel - and it sure worked its magic on me.
Its author, J D Salinger, has died - and so another of my literary heroes leaves the world. He appeared to be a very troubled man, and I'd say he was a genius on the basis of writing 'The Catcher in the Rye' alone. For me the book's main achievement was to make people realise that in a novel the story doesn't HAVE to be the most important thing - the quality of the writing and the beauty of the telling, the narrative voice, can be MORE important.
J D Salinger. Your novel made me cry and made me feel good to be alive.
Your death just made me cry. Requiescat In Pace. Thank you, and God bless your soul.

Well put, Steve. I totally agree. The 'beauty of the writing' is what I feel about many writers, even more than the aspects of the 'story'.
