Just a little Un'.

Wasted Day

I have waited a lifetime for today.
Now that it is here, I ignore it.
Like I do the sitting man
holding a dog or his flute.

Perhaps I should gift
him money, or better
still, the wealth of my time.

Oh, so complex and so compact! The fact 'you' aren't certain what the man is holding so you haven't given him your full attention-- and is he someone you've been waiting for (yes, can't help seeing the Metaphysical poets here -- dog is faithfulness, also self-will sublimated, turned into a follower, and the pipe/flute is Pan, lord of nature and sponsor of pandemonium and liberties -- man sublimated by his beliefs, a man liberated by them) and the fact that you wait for today: yes, but that could be said of every day -- but each, in its turn, has been dismissed, forgotten, you have subsequently forgotten what each one has held. And then to offer the man money or time: which would they chose? The easiest option is money -- the common presumption is money, but maybe they need someone bothering to spend time with them as a fellow human -- compassion or empathy? Thought provoking indeed.
