Poetry IS for Sale
Last June ‘Write Out Loud’ planted a poetry seed in Trafford (Altrincham Library) as part of their ‘Word Festival’. Last night that seed well and truly germinated. The Waterside Arts Centre in Sale became the latest venue for performance poetry venue for WOL.
As far as first nights go, this was a fantastic opening night. The venue itself gave a unique ‘wine bar’ relaxing atmosphere the moment you walked in. Art displays festooned the walls with small intimate tables randomly spread the length of the room with a bar serving drinks. We had positive feedback comments like; ’Excellent’, ‘Yeah, I enjoyed it’, ‘Freedom expression’, ‘Kinship – warmth, real sharing’.
The range of quality poetry fare on offer was a banquet fit for a king. We were treated to verses from WOL regulars such as Antonionioni, Jeffarama and Mr Cheese himself Gordon Zola amongst others. What was also pleasing was the number of ‘first timers’ reading their work. Speaking to them before we opened, they were nervous and some worried about the quality of their work. The relaxing and friendly atmosphere, which typifies WOL gigs, helped them over their 'pre-match nerves. As for the quality of their work, for me and the rest of the crowd, it was a treat and privilege to listen to it.
The two hours of poetry flew past and all were keen to know when the next WOL gig was in Sale. Would I recommend this ‘Cafe Bar’ poetry venue to new and more established poets? The answer is a resounding YES. Would you like to enjoy this unique atmosphere yourself, yes, then I’ll see you on the 19th of November.
