Saul Williams on slams

Hey guys,
l have just read a quote from Saul Williams (or so the website claimed), that he would be ashamed to call himself a slam poet in Britian. Anybody wanna comment on that, l have to confess l agree with him.

Got a link to that, Scott?

I am told that the Americans take slamming very seriously. Personally I take it as a laugh, and wether I get a bottle of wine or some book vouchers or not doesn't trouble me. Poetry isn't sport, it's subective, but if someone wants to make a talent contest of it, please let them do so!

I wouldn't be ashamed of being in a slam though, any more than I would be of being a poet or a human being. It's all ridiculous if you think about it long enough...

From my superficial experience of slams I think they're overblown, overrated and over here. Having said that I saw Saul W. at Latitude and he rocked with and without his band. Talent will out whatever the label. Is a slam just a production format or is it a performance style? I really don't know Mavis.

Hi guys,
I have never been to or seen a slam - but I agree with Dave, Talent will out.

Gus, I really love your phillosophical nature - I am sad that I hardly ever get to see you perform, as i'm sure it must shine through in your performances, but hey ho as I was saying very wise words my friend.
