Spotlight, Lancaster 20/05/06
It’s happened; well it had to happen didn’t it? The word army has gone undercover, Captain Scott Devon, Lance Corporal Paul Blackburn and General Dave Morgan went behind enemy lines (no jokes please) and even more shocking up north (alright you can smirk now). Yes, the word army has had it’s first covert ops, black bag mission. If we’d chosen to accept it, and we did, the job was to go to Spotlight in Lancaster and rock the house. Problem: there was only one slot available and we had three performers, so we drew lots in the poet mobile and Scott Devon won. With this scientific decision the stage was set, the pieces laid out and battle began.
Scot Devon was on second so he got his weapon ready (go on smirk you bougers), sharpened his bayonet and focused (well, put his flack jacket on really). Up first was a nervous performance virgin, he made rudimentary mistakes but showed promise, hope he’ll stick at it. But then it was the turn of the jacket. Scott Devon took the stage and stuffed five minutes full of explosive shrapnel, C4 and street poetry. Giving a performance that not only commanded absolute silence from the crowd but also got him booked for a full slot in July, mission accomplished.
After that the word army could relax kinda guessing that our cover might have been blown, (should of seen that coming really). The rest of spotlight was a mix of serious alongside comedy poems and music. With a soft guitar set at the halfway point followed by a contemporary poet pair called the two Williams who worked well together but couldn’t quite sustain the audience for 20 minutes.
But the real star of the night was yet to shine. Going off like a scud and lighting the night like a burning Iraqi oil well. His name was, his name was Stephen Thompson and the real Stephen Thompson did stand up, did stand up but in disguise under the pseudonym Steve the poet (crafty, crafty). He was excellent all through his act with the fantastic opening line, ‘l used to be a poet but now l’m happy’. The word army was very pleased, well Dave and l were, l think Paul had gone to the bar.
The night ended with some very cool jazz which Dave wanted to listen to all night long but with all our ammunition spent it was time to make a tactical withdrawal even though Dave was kicking and screaming all the way back to the covert poetry vehicle.
Spotlight is a great eclectic night that packs a full punch, the word army will be back in July with Scott Devon and Dave Morgan (who got booked without performing, that’s why he’s one of our generals l guess, l mean yes sir). See you there with safety catches off.
