The realtity of captain Savlvation

Captain salvation

Captain salvation’s going to wave a magic wand and you all are going to be saved
as long as your not morally depraved
put your feet on his back and we will fly to heaven
even with the weight of the world on his shoulders

Captain salvation knows best how to rule
he’s strong, he’s brave, he saves, and he’s cool
we are going to sing hymns all day to praise his name
while the immoral deviants and the devil live out their shame in hell
where it smells like brimstone and there is fire
while we get to live out our hearts desire

but in reality we don’t want a saviour we just want a magic wand
you see a saviour points the way but we have to follow
the truth is hard to swallow we are going to crawl on our hands and knees carrying a cross ands fighting off anything that gets in the way of saving ourselves

we also don’t want a saviour who rules
because we want to rule the world ourselves
we don’t want a dictator
but when the world is messed up and broken
we will welcome someone to clean up the mess!

This gave me great pause for thought -- arcana Americana -- I do like Captain Salvation, an instant saviour available to those in dire need when all hope is lost. And the fact that the Salvation is active and the person saved and the soul salvaged are passive: powerful ideas set against the true nature of 'salvation' -- something achieved, worked for, earned and no quick fix. But the 'buyers' prefer the instant, the momentous, the riotous, the super powered hero whose gift is to save without being judgemental. I'm not sure about the idea of saviour as dictator at the end... that's the only bit that didn't work for me. Ah, but that's probably just me! Engaging and engrossing.
