West Midlands Poetry

The West Midlands is a huge area, so this is just a snapshot of events.

There’s a rebirth of poetry publishing in the area at the moment. Heaventree (www.heaventreepress.com ), a well established press with a growing reputation, run in Coventry by Jonathan Morley, publishes pamphlets and books by leading poets, including Simon Turner, Matt Nunn and Mario Petrucci; much of its output reflects Jonathan’s interest in post-colonial literature. Jonathan also organises literature events, such as the poetry tent at the annual Godiva weekend in Coventry. It has recently been joined by Nine Arches Press (www.ninearchespress.com ), run by Jane Commane and Matt Nunn, which has just published the first edition of its magazine, Under the Radar, and a collection of poems written by Jane Holland as Warwick Poet Laureate. Along with Meredith Andrea, I have recently become co-director of Flarestack Poets (www.flarestackpoets.co.uk), which marks the return of Flarestack Publishing to Birmingham. Our first two titles, to be published in autumn 2009, will be selected from a pamphlet competition, closing date 28th February 2008.

There are a number of open mic events across the area. I run Poetry Bites at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Birmingham (www.jacquirowe.com/page5.htm) which combines floor spots with readings by nationally acclaimed guest poets. Generally on the fourth Tuesday of alternate months (January, March...) Poetry Bites attracts a large, appreciative audience to a beautiful setting (an urban garden centre with fantastic food!) where, in the open mic, beginners read alongside leading local poets. Pure and Good and Right is a very popular monthly event, again combining open mic and guests, in Leamington Spa. This was run for a long time by Sean Kelly, but George Hardwick and Dick Leith have taken over now that Sean has moved to the north east. Andre Hesson’s exciting Artistic Soul events in Birmingham feature spoken word and music.

There are lots and lots of poetry groups in the West Midlands, including a Poetry Society Stanza in Birmingham, the long established Cannon Poets and the Lichfield Poets amongst many others. An interesting project is currently running in Polesworth, Warwickshire, which has an historical association with Michael Drayton, John Donne and Ben Jonson, where attempts are underway to set up a poetry trail through the town, with the poems to be selected through a competition. Malcolm Dewhirst, who is running the project, is also putting on workshops and readings. http://personalpoetmal.tripod.com/ppst/.

Poetry workshops are available at festivals, such as the Birmingham Book Festival and Warwick Words. Throughout 2008 I have been running the pilot season of my organisation, Making Poetry, www.jacquirowe.com/page6.htm which has put on monthly workshops on Saturdays in the beautiful Shakespeare Memorial Room in Birmingham centre. Led by myself and Meredith Andrea, with masterclasses from Mario Petrucci, workshops have coved topics such as writing about people, form , beginnings and randomness. The first year has been so successful that Making Poetry will continue in 2009.

The West Midlands is such a vibrant and diverse area that it is impossible to cover everything that’s going on in poetry but I hope I've given you a flavour and, if you live in the area, get involved - it's worth it.
