December 2016 guests are Rosie Garland and Stephanie Bowgett:
Rosie Garland is an eclectic writer and performer: novelist, poet, singer in post-punk band The March Violets, and alternative cabaret chanteuse Rosie Lugosi the Vampire Queen. With a passion for language nurtured by libraries, she started out in spoken word, garnering praise from Apples and Snakes as ‘one of the country’s finest performance poets’. Her award-winning short stories, poems and essays have been widely anthologised. She has five solo collections of poetry and forthcoming in 2016 is the sixth, ‘As In Judy’ (Flapjack Press). Her Debut novel ‘The Palace of Curiosities’ (The Borough Press 2013) won the Book of the Year in the Co-op Respect Awards 2013 and was nominated for both The Desmond Elliott and the Polari First Book Prize. Follow-up, ‘Vixen’, was a Green Carnation Prize nominee.
Stephanie Bowgett grew up all over the place including in Germany, but has lived longer in Huddersfield than anywhere. She has worked in education for most of her life, but is now mostly retired. She has been published in magazines, won a spattering of poetry prizes had a pamphlet published by Slow Dancer. A founder member of the Albert poets, she is the present contact for these readings. She runs a weekly workshop with John Duffy and has a new pamphlet (as yet untitled) published by Calder Valley Poetry coming out by the end of the year. (Also, the email listings of northern poetry events she tirelessly disperses are a lifeline for Northern live literature!)
