Biography

My name is Adam Barrett and I am a writer and poet from North East England. My work handles themes of place, class, and masculinity, and is inspired by working-class and punk cultures. I am passionate about widening poetry to new audiences, particularly those from a working-class background, and promoting the benefits of writing and creativity.

Poems

Low Seam The pulse between blackdamp clouds quickens below red footfall. Abandoned seams shudder where they picked the devil's door – to spite coal walls a lady of iron answered, oversized dressing gown about her frame, and closed the pit for their disruption. Sunday Mass See quilted plains reach for the horizon, divert at the hop towers and churches arguing their differences, Their shapes and colours and angles salute the faith they believe to be true. It's Sunday morning, postcard-perfect to let bells toll and welcome processions to pews and bines alike. The only call is wind. Distant and squeaking like it moves through a pinhole in leather. The only Sunday tribute is hosted by a man drinking red in a hypermarket at 10am – I'm quick to judge then join his congregation.
