Samples
The Blacksmith's Daughter Row upon row of narrow, neat gardens Behind a sooty, last-century terrace. By the grassy dint of a lost air-raid shelter I can smell the sweet honeysuckle That fans out across the outhouse wall, And hear a distant train on the soft, summer air. We kneel, side by side with fork and trowel, Leaning in among the wallflowers and forget-me-nots, You tell of a girl in a village long ago, Then sing 'The Sprig Of Thyme' To yourself, or me, quietly, And I feel love's warm certainty. A lifetime or more afterwards, I think again of your dark eyes That mirrored my own, And wonder always at their melancholy; For your long-lost Eden, perhaps, Or the unyielding ache of widowhood.
