Cherry tree (appeared in Live Canon prize anthology, 2014) Up from the car park through mud furrows past mounds of gravel bound with docks, my way flanks the dragon building where ghosts hunch round room-dividers, look sightless through smoked glass, then round the back to the corner made by bike-shed and portakabin. Drifts of ballerina pink – could be confetti – but the old cherry shedding, moving through its cycle another year before piledrivers hammer. Drifts pile at its foot in fairytale grooves, lying lightly on moss between roots barred with annular scars and muscled like wrists. At end of day I look at clouds, am not surprised by snowflakes whirling from below to third floor windows but it’s petals swirling up, turning like feathers from a swan queen.
