Biography

Hello! My name is Katie and I am 26 years old. I am from Montreal and have a deep love of words. I get a kick out of word play and write poems in my free time. While I explore complex and sometimes difficult themes in my poems, I add levity to my pieces with whimsical imagery, symbols and rhymes.

Poem: the girl made out of clay Once there lived a little girl Who always aimed to please. She loved to help out all her friends To give their life more ease. She jumped up high to reach their toys She crouched to tie their shoes And all because she reaped such joy When they paid her their dues. She did not want their money She did not want to trade For her their praises were enough, the kind words they conveyed The girl just couldn’t get enough! That way it made her feel To hear her friends say such great stuff Showed her her own appeal “I wish I could do more for them” girl mused to herself So she wished upon a star one night And then appeared an elf! He burst into her room that night In puffs of purple smoke! It was like her wish was answered All those prayers that she spoke “I heard your wish” the elf declared, as he approached the girl “And you’re in luck, cuz I can grant it with my magic pearl” “What do you mean?” The young girl gasped Racked with shock and glee “This pearl you have, what can it do, and how can it serve me?” “You wear it as a necklace” the little elf explained “And you’ll transform into whatever your mind entertains!” He handed her the magic pearl, She clasped it round her neck The suddenly the elf vanished No trace left, not a speck The girl thought it was a mirage “It can’t be what it seems An elf, and now this magic pearl This must all be a dream” And so she went to bed promptly So sure it wasn’t true But deep down she still fantasized ‘Bout what that the pearl could do. But When she woke up the next morning At the crack of day She saw the pearl had been reforming Her body in clay! Her arms could touch the ceiling Her legs could stretch real wide She thought of the help she’d been dealing, what she’d now provide Her friends all jumped for joy When they saw what she could do. She could do more that grab their toys Or simply tie their shoes The clay girl could transform into Whatever thing they pleased A unicorn A circus clown And All with grace and ease They showered her with love and praise They told her she’s the best The clay girl revelled in it all Until one fateful test The kids entered a competition Centred round charades “With you we’ll win for sure” they cheered “Clay girls always amaze” The clay girl wanted to help out She wanted pitch in But for her all of her friends’ cheering was already a win They sauntered into a huge hall Its stage shrouded in light And got in line with other teams Crowded backstage real right When the clay girl and her friends Started their turn before the judge All went great at first She was a tree, a cow, some fudge! But then something awful transpired Clay girl messed one round up. She turned into a glass of water But the clue was “cup” The judge said glasses weren’t the same And so they lost that round And clay girls friends were so angry Snarling like rabid hounds The clay girl felt her hands sag low Straight down onto the floor Her arms were covered in scratches Her clay had just been scored “You messed up bad” her friends all whined “It should’ve been so easy!” Then clay girl ran out straight back home She felt so sick and queasy “I changed my mind” The clay girl cried And wished upon a star “Clay’s too soft to be made of, People stretch you too far” Then suddenly the elf appeared He heard the how clay girl prayed “I’ll tell you what” the small man hinted “I’ll make you a trade” “ if you return the pearl to me, ill make you how you were, but in exchange you’ll need to pay a cost it’ll incur” “What is it?” Clay girl asked with fear She thought the pearl was free Not some cruel trick the elf devised, acting fancy free “Don’t you worry” the elf giggled “It’s not that kind of trade I just need you to wear this brand new necklace that I made” And to the clay girl’s amazement The necklace shined so bright! The pendant was a mirror And it glowed in golden light. “You have to make a promise” the elf told the clay girl “To wear this necklace in place of where once there was that pearl “It’ll keep you on the straight and narrow Give you all its praise It’ll tell you when you’ve helped enough And heal you when you’re grazed” The clay girl clasped it round her neck And closed her eyes real tight And suddenly the elf vanished again right out of sight She lay down on her bed and to her great relief next morning She had returned to her old self That clay girl, just a warning She couldn’t touch the ceiling But she did not feel rough Cuz she knew deep inside that Her own praises were enough Her friends all jumped for joy When they saw what she could do. She could do more that grab a toy Or simply tie their shoe The clay girl could transform into Whatever thing they pleased A unicorn A circus clown All with grace and ease They showered her with love and praise They told her she’s the best The clay girl revelled in it all Until one fateful test The kids entered a competition Centred round charades “With you we’ll win for sure” they cheered “Clay girls always amaze” The clay girl wanted to help out She wanted pitch in But for her all of her friends’ cheering was already a win They sauntered into a huge hall With a stage shrouded in light And got in line with other teams Crowded backstage real right When the clay girl and her friends Started their turn before the judge All went great at first She was a tree, a cow, some fudge! But then something awful transpired Clay girl messed one round up. She turned into a glass of water But the clue was “cup” The judge said glasses weren’t the same And she withdrew a point And clay girls friends were so angry How could she disappoint? The clay girl felt her hands sag low Straight down onto the floor Her arms were covered in scratches Her clay had just been scored “You messed up bad” her friends all whined “It should’ve been so easy!” Then clay girl ran out straight back home She felt so sick and queasy “I changed my mind” The clay girl cried And wished upon a star “Clay’s too soft to be made of, People stretch you too far” Then suddenly the elf appeared He heard the how clay girl prayed “I’ll tell you what” the small man hinted “I’ll make you a trade” “ if you return the pearl to me, ill make you how you were, but in exchange you’ll need to pay a cost it’ll incur” “What is it?” Clay girl asked with fear She thought the pearl was free Not some cruel trick the elf devised, acting all fancy free “Don’t you worry” the elf giggled “It’s not that kind of trade I just need you to wear this brand new necklace that I made” And to the clay girl’s amazement The necklace shined so bright!
