The Hand Collector I am thirteen. In awe of the girl who sits next to me in Geography class with hands far beyond her age; a maze of canyons that snake across the plains of palms and merge into riverbeds of heart lines, life lines. Skin tanned from living more in thirteen years than I know I will ever achieve. I am ten. A gurgling marshmallow is placed with the greatest care into my lap. I am old enough now to be trusted to look after brand new and pillowy-plump hands, an invisible elastic band segregates arm from palm. Hands that are yet to tell stories, but are pink and honest strings of sausages. I am eight. Transfixed, I watch as blue-grey veins appear to dance across hands that move an electric whisk into thick batter with more ferocity than the off-white, paper thin skin should be able to manage.
