GREEN TEARS 40 years ago, I was planted on the ground by loving hands. And was nurtured with diligence and tender care, I grew thankful for the life given to me. And have made the delights of all, providing cool and shade. Not long ago, the people who loved me so, passed on. New owners bought the house, and with it, The patch of ground I occupy. And much to my dismay one day I heard them say, They did not like the leaves I shed from time to time. That they would like a better view of the asphalt and the cars passing by. They, I heard, would like to do away with me.... Oh, how I wish they could hear my cry!! If they just could, I would plea to them and say; Please don’t cut me down, don't do me harm..!! I promise I'll keep providing cool and shade for you On hot steaming Summer days And my branches will keep hosting nests for birds That will bring their song and cheer for your delight. I promise to keep helping clean the air you breath. And contribute in the formation of rain clouds for this arid land of yours. Not to mention, the beauty that I add to your facade, So admired by every passerby. Then ask yourself why, do you want to do away with me? What harm does my existence do to you? The Creator, ages ago, willed us to be And be partners in this cycle of life and time.... For without us, ,... you'll have no breath to exist. Maria E. Martinez May, 20th of 2016
