Biography

Hello reader, My name's Rolph, a writer of poems and other literature who enjoys reflecting on the world with a mix of humour and seriousness. Whether I’m exploring political themes or contemplating life's everyday moments, I aim to capture what moves me through words. Limericks are my go-to form, but I also appreciate diving into deeper, more serious topics. Outside of writing, I spend my time in the garden, I also enjoy city trips, good books, foreign languages, and a good whisky – and yes, I live by the belief that "Whatever can go wrong, goes wrong with me!" In a world where ingratitude seems too common, at least I can always rely on humour.

Striped Dreams – A Limerick

Zebras sit behind bars with a flair, To resemble white horses, so rare. With stripes black and white, In their confined sight, Dreaming of plains without a care.

The Rooster’s Serenade. A Limerick

One rooster, with feathers so bright, Sang of mornings from dawn until night. But alas, its fate was clear, In the soup pot, it'd soon disappear, Yet it sang on with all of its might!

…on “déjà brew” - @Rolph David 🌷I esteem you with greatest gratitude at the depth of consideration and the thoughtful effort applied in engaging this poem. It parallels the enviable phenomenon that exists rather momentarily during an invigorating poetry class discussion. 🌷You are much appreciated ( rbk ) 🙏🏻🕊

on “‘til all my breath is you” - It’s much like walking a tightrope, both exhilarating at once and absolutely terrifying within the selfsame moment; yes! Thanks Rolph 🙏🏻🕊🌷rbk)

Good morning Holden,
Thank you for your improvement. May I ask why you chose this unusual biography entry, namely to choose a Greek poem?
Regards,
Rolph

Hello Rolph,
I'm really glad you enjoyed the poem by Cavafy😊 The first verse of the translation is very good, but the second one isn't as close to the original meaning, so I found this one as well:

"Even if you cannot shape your life as you want it,
at least try this
as much as you can; do not debase it
in excessive contact with the world,
in the excessive movements and talk.

Do not debase it by taking it,
dragging it often and exposing it
to the daily folly
of relationships and associations,
until it becomes burdensome as an alien life."
(Lockert Library of Poetry in Translation)

Also, I'm adding a link to Cavafy's probably most known poem, which is worth reading I think:
