Self Harm

It starts with a cut
Into tissue already scarred,
Grown pink and ugly over time.

With each laceration
We feel the sting more keenly
A fire through our nerves
To remind us we're alive.

We slice and we peel
Until the body does not remember
The bite of the pain
We no longer feel.

Yet over time, scars heal
And flesh regrows anew
Knits back together
With the skin of new beginnings.

And then it starts with a cut
Into tissue already scarred...
