I Am With You
Your footsteps have taken you further
than you ever wanted to go.
So far away from where you called home.
You traveled through the darkest of nights
fumbling and crawling in fear.
You walked under the shadow of death
certain that you would never again see the light of day.
You ran, and you ran, and you ran,
but could never seem to run fast enough
to escape everything that was haunting you.
You descended into the pit of despair,
that hellish hole that kept you captive
for so many years.
You made your bed in the mire,
and in filth you laid your weary head,
only to sleep a restless sleep.
You hid yourself away in darkness
hoping that no one would find you.
You wore your masks
hoping that no one would see you.
You didn’t heed the voice calling out to you,
but sought to escape its sound.
You were surrounded with troubles on all sides
and hardships you knew all too well.
But in every place you have gone
these words were there to find you:
I am with you.

My wife wanted to do this painting and I wrote the poem alongside that painting. It’s our second collaborative work.
