Poetry goes big in Gloucester as installations spread across city

entry picture

Poetry installations featuring large-scale letters and art works stencilled in the landscape are appearing all over the city of Gloucester. The Of Earth and Sky project, curated by artist Luke Jerram and hip hop and spoken word artist JPDL, features the work of 30 poets.

The poetry takes the form of 1.2m high wooden letters or is stencilled on grass or on hard surfaces that form part of the urban environment. In some places a single line has been taken from a longer poem that can be read in full on the project's website.

Contributors range from children to retired people, and include members of Gloucester Poetry Society. Some were inspired by their experiences during the Covid pandemic. The project has been commissioned by Gloucester Culture Trust and Gloucester cathedral.

Luke Gerram said: "This project is about connecting the people and communities of Gloucestershire - and after what we have all been through this year, there has never been a better time to do so.” Locations include Gloucester docks, Gloucester’s cathedral, the city’s Guildhall, St Oswald’s Priory, and a number of parks and play areas. The installations will be unveiled and remain for two months from Monday 24 August, until Sunday 1 November.
