Crossing
She volunteered at the hospice,
They'd seen off her old man fine
Daytimes she was a lollipop lady
Keeping kids safe with her sign
Then she took ill, her sight went
Gradually the kids put in peril,
A brain tumour behind her eyes
Still the kids relied on old Beryl
Sadly she gave up the hospice
Painkillers made her too weary
The kids noticed she was tired
Getting cross and often teary
Seeing the traffic became hard
She relied mainly on her ears
The head-mistress had a word
Concerned about parents fears
One Monday she didn't see a van
Walked straight out onto the road
The kids prayed for Beryl, unaware
What hospital blood tests showed
Back at the hospice, she's in
The bed where her Bill died,
Waiting for a lollipop lady to
Guide her to the other side
