Orpheus and Eurydice
Into the Underworld, Orpheus was allowed to go.
To rescue Eurydice from a land of the dead below.
But the Gods laid down laws, that he had to obey.
Or in the clutches of hell, she would forever stay.
If Eurydice was found, a promise he had to keep. Not to look at her face, until away from the deep.
In the bleak, chilling depths of an unworldly home.
Orpheus in desperation trod paths, cold and alone.
Orpheus walked in darkness, hearing echoes of pain.
Looking for Eurydice, through the devils cold terrain.
On his magical ancient lyre, he played frozen strings.
Haunting creatures gathered and spread their wings.
Orpheus sung enticing songs, as Hellish winds blew.
At last a misty vision behind him, formed and grew.
Eurydice surfaced from Hades, hands cold like stone.
If Orpheus turned to face her, he would return alone.
As he reached the worlds portal, in impatient haste.
Orpheus turned to his wife, so each other they faced.
Eurydice then vanished, a nightmarish scream heard.
Orpheus defied the Gods warning, their every word.
He returned to the upper world, without her by his side.
He let his life waste away upon lost rocks and cried.
The torment of his failure left him in a world of despair.
Broken and tortured, no other love would he ever share.
