Before My eYes
before my eyes, a cornstalk
an ear, a nose of stone, a
rotten stump, a swarm of ants,
before my yes, or no, or maybe
but where there is, there was
there has also been a seed
burst into a wriggly sprout,
a hairy root, a stem stretching
toward a new sun that winked
days, nights, seasons, a tree
ringing the centuries until
a storm’s flash burned into
its heart withering it down
a termite to eat and defecate
as fertilizer for a mossy
seat, where a human sat–
before my eyes, a creator
created, destroyed, recreated
before my yes, or no,
