Article 4: Children during pandemic
An year long pandemic has started showing its effect on children. For an year they seemed the most happiest as they thought the period of lockdown as a vacation to rest, play, sleep and enjoy. Every good thing has an end. Anything taken in high dose can have it's negative impact. So has this so called pandemic vacation for children which at first was heartily welcomed but now is leaving behind terrible psychological impacts on children. There have been many suicide cases in the adult group but children didn't succumb to this pandemic or lockdown dread. Now things are fast changing at this front. Children are reported to have been complaining about their loss of interest in studies and creative activities. An year of self monitored studies and fun on internet has taken its toll. Children are fast losing interest in studies and are often seen to be completely over burdened with this new teaching learning method. I won't say all the children are negatively affected but definitely a large group of children are getting demotivated and disinterested.
As a parent, teacher or school we need to realise the growing psychological issues in students and children. We need to take early responsible steps in this regard without ignoring it. We can't leave this dire situation in the hands of time and situation. We can't just sit back and wait for a miracle to happen where the old normal will be back again. We have to accept our present situation and take responsible steps. Realising the growing problem amidst pandemic and the growing number of children falling easy victim to this problem, I thought of taking the initiative to put across my concern and also solutions. I would appreciate the concerned authorities to come forward in this matter and decide a systematic strategy to combat or mitigate this glaring problem. Before the situation goes out of hand and our children bear the brunt of PTSD, we should make constructive efforts to solve this problem before it takes an irreparable form.
I think, psychologists are the best people to come forward and give counselling to children through videos, articles, short stories in order to motivate them in right way. The doctor best understands the disease and the doctor can be the best person to treat the disease in its proper way. Therefore, the parents and schools should approach and appoint a good psychologist on a regular basis to help the children come out of this developing syndrome. Regular sessions on one to one basis with children who are highly affected can show quick results. Thus parents and school authorities shouldn't ignore the growing symptoms amongst children and should show immediate concerns.
Problems amongst children during pandemic:
1. Loss of interest in studies
2. Oversleeping
3. Drowsiness
4. Lethargy
5. Depression
6. Anxiety
7. Tension
8. Loss of hope
These are few of the problems that are easily visible or can be understood through conversation with them. We elders need to be vigilant enough to find the traces of these problems or any other and should take responsible steps inorder to solve the problem immediately and responsibly.
Causes of these growing problems:
1. Death of parents or near relatives
2. Continuous news of death
3. Reading or listening to news excessively
4. Unable to communicate fear and anxiety
5. Ignorance by parents realising the problem in their child
6. Exposing the child to incessant traumatic situations
7. Taking the children to hospitals while visiting the doctor
8. Continuously asking the students to write or express their views about pandemic
There can be innumerable causes of the growing problem in children. Some are stated above and many can be seen at individual levels. Not all children are showing all the signs of these problems. But if one sign starts to develop in the child then he is definitely heading towards a dangerous situation. We got to be alert and find the best treatment for child on time.
Solution to the growing problems faced by children can be given by experts. Few of the ways in which we can deal with these problems at our level are as follows:
1. Discipline your child with a new home rotuine. Having a fixed wake up and sleeping time, meal timings can be fixed.
2. Monitor what the child is watching over television, internet or reading in newspapers
3. Building up hope for a beautiful future ahead by making positive statements around them.
4. Connect with God to build in unbreakable faith in good destiny ahead
5. Don't discuss too much about pandemic, vaccines, medicines
6. Don't have to share the news of death with them
7. Avoid watching documentaries, news or anything that is depressing
8. Educate them about this pandemic in a positive way
9. Teach them the proper use of sanitizers, masks
10. Guide them about good hygiene, nutritious diet, exercising etc.
11. Make a time table for online school, homework, games, exercises and hobbies
12. Encourage them to take up some hobby like singing, dancing, painting, playing instruments, calligraphy, writing, reading etc.
13. Motivational stories, movies, novels, lectures will help
There're umpteen number of ways in which a child could be motivated to look forward to life ahead with enthusiasm and zeal. Each child has his own problem which needs individual attention, care and therapy. What works best for a child has to be seen and accordingly we can help the child. There's no fixed program, therapies or ways in which the problem can be solved. We can't have single recipe for all children. Therefore we need to be careful while treating the child inorder to solve their problem according to what works best for them. It's not one day job to be done rather an ongoing process which needs patience and continuous perseverance. If one way doesn't work for your child, try another way or may be a mixed way is required to help the child. Incase of severe problem it's advisable to take professional help and treatment. Don't become a doctor and start medication on advise of relatives and friends, it can worsen the problem. So stay alert and save your child on time.
