Charlie
Seven months we grieved our collie,
Our Max, so funny and sweet.
How we missed not having a dog,
Our home was incomplete.
And so now the time seemed right
To get a new canine friend.
We got one at a rescue centre,
A 57 variety blend.
Maybe we should have called him Heinz
But Charlie is his name.
He has the longest tongue we ever saw
But we chose him just the same.
He mostly has a loving nature,
But has one bad blip,
No one has thought to tell him
Last week he had the snip!
He always wanted to hump my leg
And wouldn’t take no for an answer.
He was heavy, strong and persistent,
I was going off this chancer!
Many long walks trying to tire him
Didn’t help in the least.
Finally I had to give up
When he persisted in the street.
The size and strength of a Labrador,
He was fully grown at two.
In the street he became quite snappy.
There’s grandkids to think of too.
For us a dog for life is the rule,
So we were sad to hand him back,
But bonding had proved too hard
With this “Leader of the Pack”.
