Independent
Independent - What does that mean?
In my flat; never to be seen
No one to help me, make a brew: You’re
Independent now, they said.
When it’s time to make my bed, I find it a
Bit tricky
I ask for some help, a hand comes up: You’re independent now.
My meal for one, it’s easy they said
Don’t worry if you burn your fingers'.
A neighbour; he’s independent too
He shouts a lot, and throws things, he scares
Me sometimes.
Now I have a job, “That’s great Karen, you’re really
Independent now”.
I know the bus, where to get on and off
“That’s all you need to remember” they said.
Back in my flat again, my heart hurts: Does that mean
I’m in pain?
Off to the Doctors; I’m fit as a fiddle he says!
“This is the tenth time this week Karen, it must stop!”
Hop on the bus again, it’s the wrong way, I’ve got no
Money, the driver asks me to pay
They say: This is being independent .

Hello Dear Belinda
Thought provoking poem; So many issues just with one word” INDEPENDENT" Well this word is a broad spectrum word to be used. Some like independence and some do no not!
I believe it is a matter of choice which direction an individual takes. Life in general requires being INDEPENDENCE...Again; I can go on and on this one… We had to teach independence our clients who lost the privilege due illness or accidents.
GREAT POEM!!!
Kind Regards,
Zuzanna
