Comparing Dreams

Daybreak came round again.
She had a foot massage booked at a plush spa
but veered away admiring irises and unknown blooms.
His sister attacked his dad in hospital
pulling out tubes.
She returned to a childhood home
so improbably different now!
His 'phone wouldn't function right
distraught Romeo couldn't contact Juliet.

A few kisses sort it all out.
Add another few after breakfast:
it's here they part for separate days.

A sudden pellucid sky, the silvered shade
of an antique mirror. It seemed worth the effort
but much as he tried, he couldn't
quite see his face in it.
Inanimate bus stop folk sported
the latest brands, already fading.
He reached for Bach and Zappa.

Over the phone a needy friend surfaced.
She consoled and sympathised
and went shopping on auto-pilot
planning yet more life-brightening schemes.
A stand of Pissarro trees grew taller
as she neared, on the look out for
a number of magpies or perhaps a robin.
Bright green parrots will do.

After a shift of lifting boxes:
lift, place; lift, place;
Adam couldn't rush home fast enough
to renew the embrace with Eve.
The fox he glimpsed became part of real life
when he related the sighting to his treasured girl.
She let him know the state of their empire
and the aggro from locals.

They attempted, half-hearted, by dusk
to find something good on TV.
She said she'd like to live by the coast.
He'd like to pick up the guitar again,
maybe sitar or banjo.
How lovely it could be having a dog
or two or three she thought.
He offered a picture of them
living out their retirement in Portugal.

They shared more and greater dreams
as it was us who rode into the sunset,
the curtain came down and we were snapped back
into the practical. All the same,
we too will share dream after dream
and that is fit to celebrate.
