Looking Out To Sea
For no particular reason we'll stop
look over the water hand in hand
we'll be just the age we are now
and all time together springtime
Reliving moments of expansive love
languid sun-dazed children recall our own
smiles like great banners of joy
poetry caught up in the simplest words
Butter-coloured dunes, trailing grass crests,
billowing sky one translucent pashmina,
undulating sea another, and we two
entwined in memory, in a photo
And here in faithful reality I say
it is springtime, it is festival; hear it
sung by unidentified birds on high
while this lasting sculpture our shadows form
looking out to sea.
