After the Rain
After the Rain
The autumn air is filled with dampness
In the woods, the ground is wet underfoot
Leaves hang low with the weight of raindrops, from
Bedraggled branches, shaken by the overnight storm
Dew drops, drip slowly from each leaf
Hedgerows wear a lattice of tangled vines
Twigs lie broken, scattered upon the ground
Ditches burst forth with cloudy brackish water
Overflowing and seeping onto the bank
Forming a soup of fallen foliage, feathers and rich berries
Paths are muddy, squelching with each step
Above, the sky is clear, blue and cloud-free
Filled with the joyful birdsong of morning
Sun has followed rain and the day is set fair
