St Sophia's cathedral, Constantinople

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” – JS Mill (not Edmund Burke)

St Sophia’s cathedral in Constantinople,
Ecclesia Sanctae Sophia,
Surrounded by minarets.
Built in 537 AD (nearly 1500 years ago).
The patriarchal cathedral of Divine Wisdom
In the imperial capital of Byzantium, Constantinople.
It is the largest church in the Christian east.
In 2020, under the direction of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,
Wannabe Sultan and friend of the USA and UK in NATO,
The cathedral was summarily stolen from the Greek Orthodox Church
And opened as a mosque, the Hagia Sophia.
The final act in the long genocide of Christians in Anatolia.
The deliberate destruction of the Byzantine inheritance in Turkey.
In 1915 there were around 4 million
Assyrian, Greek and Armenian Christians living in Turkey,
Around 25% of the population,
Including communities such as the Pontic Greeks
Settled on the Black sea coast for 3000 years,
Since the time of the poet Homer.
Now there are only a few thousand Christians
In Constantinople among 15 million Muslims.
The genocide of Turkey’s Christians
Inspired Hitler to attempt to do the same to Europe’s Jews.
The so-called Christian West has done precisely nothing
To help the Christians of the East.
This selfishness and pathetic cowardice
Will bring eternal shame on all of us!!

Thank you so much for writing about this. It will make many feel uncomfortable, but as a Greek with grandparents from Constantinople, this is a very important matter to my family.
