Book Review: Swan Songs by Lee Scott (Repeater Books)

Lee Scott should not in 2022 need an introduction to fans of underground UK rap (but may need one to non-fans). He is arguably the best rapper in the UK of the past 10 years, profilic musician and record label co-owner who has helped bring many talents from the North East of England such as King Grubb, Tony Broke & Bill Shakes to a wider audience.

Yet still his music is not as widely known as the major stars of UK rap, and relatively unskilled rappers in comparison are given the media spotlight which Lee should be getting a share of.

Swan Songs shows the unique turn of phrase that fans of his music know and love. If you love his music you'll most likely like this book. The magical realism aspect of the novel wasn't fully comprehensible to me but I'm hoping that was the point. The "real realism" of the modern world of work and a struggling artist keeps it real too.

It's good to see that fellow UK polymath rapper Akala also released a fiction book in 2021 as well.

I personally am waiting for a book by Oshea, another pre-eminent rapper (and comedy genius) from the North West of England.
