A Cruise Ship

A Cruise Ship

It arrives in the harbour as a monstrosity

resembling a floating block of flats.

It disgorges a human cargo

of over fed geriatrics whose manners and attitude

cause me to disown my own

Arrogance is unleashed and atrocious examples

of ill mannered behaviour

are exemplified

This is a witness to who and what we have become

Time draws nigh on this appalling generation

The harvest is now being reaped

It's a general problem, Keith. The first time I went abroad in 1971, I remember seeing a group of British tourists doing a noisy goose step in the high street of a small Dutch town. I still do not know why.

Graham,
Thank you. There are times when I think I am alone in my thoughts. I was so astonished yesterday. A group of several people who were so dismissive of local people. I felt a sense of personal and collective shame at what I witnessed. What causes this behaviour? I am at a loss.
Thank you
Keith

Whilst I do take the point of both the writer’s and KJ’s views, I am sorry to say that having recently returned from France via the Eurotunnel experience, I was appalled both ways at the behaviour of the British travelers of all ages.

Kevin,
Thank you for your comment. I wrote this as a result of what I saw yesterday. Like yourself we were brought up that manners maketh man, but what I witnessed yesterday was frankly appalling. The common courtesies have gone and have been replaced by vulgarity and arrogance.
Thanks again
Keith

I've taken issue with some of your previous postings, when you have criticized the manners of the younger generation. Apologies for that, manners are important.
This one kind of demonstrates my point. Manners isn't just about etiquette and saying please and thank you. It's about having the right attitude.
Some of these geriatrics sound horrendous.
