warriers with steely hearts

who carry within their breasts
a pounding fear
a fear for the life of their loved ones
a fear for their land
a fear of their deaths
ordinary men
extraordinary men
they fight
with courage beyond our understanding
we salute them for their bravery
embarrassed by our safety
we will them to live - to succeed
but in their hour of need
we are helpless.

We do indeed salute them - salute their bravery, and determination to resist and repel the invader. And Putin pretends that Ukraine is part of Russia. These defenders give the lie to his self-deceit.
Stephen thank you for your like and your comment is greatly appreciated, it is easy to think of fighters as trained professionals, I was trying to show that this is not the case here.

I like this one. It touches raw nerves and says uncomfortable things, as poetry should.

This poem succinctly encapsulates the reality of human conflict, yet sadly we seem doomed to repeat it. A poem which takes aways the trees and we see the wood.
