EARLY MORNING INNER CITY

As the dawn whitens hazily, the baby sleeps,
the house falls quiet
with breath

this is the time I love  the best
before the busy scratchings of the day
the makings-do
scatter my thin dreams

night is different, with all its smoky gleams,
now is the time of the cat
silently purring

the trees full-leaved still, the grass long, bedewed,
shadows on these city streets
meet the moontime in me

food is the last thing on my mind
but I must eat
these fruits of dawn.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius is a profound book and worth reading despite its age. I would agree he was probably the wisest of Romans as a philosopher but my hero will always be Hadrian.
Thanks again John

Thank you Holden, KL, Stephen and Keith. Marcus Aurelius was, in my opinion, the wisest of the Romans:

"When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love."

'Now is the time of the cat'. I love that, John. In fact, I love it all.

A poem richly exquisite in its descriptive quality. You have captured those early precious moments of dawn in a sublime way where the reader is taken to that hour of the an incipient day.
A poem of real quality.
Thank you for this
Keith
