Detachment | Agonizing Words

entry picture

Detachment: the state of being objective or aloof.

Just a simple word with a simple meaning but with much importance in the life of a normal human being. We may never notice, but it's a virtue if you know when to detach yourself from a feeling, person, or habit. It may sound a bit awkward to people when you tell them just to detach themselves from something that used to have great importance in their life but now it's just a burden or now has been in their habit even if it's for no good reason.

Why do we need to learn how to detach ourselves from the things that we're attached to. Attachment isn't something that we can control most of the time. Usually, we get attached to the person with the least expectation, but you can't control that fully. It's just something that happens on its own, and then we just enjoy that feeling. Mostly many people have their first experience during an early age as puberty hits. And that's even natural for you to feel attached to someone even if they don't feel the same for you.

As attachment is not something that's a two-way thing. And that's why detachment is something that helps people. But it's not as easy as we say. Having yourself detached from something is a whole new thing that may affect your way of thinking and bring changes in your habits and the way you presented yourself.

It takes a lot of courage and sheer will to learn how to control your phenomenon of attachment and detachment. Some might lose hope in the middle of their struggle and let go of it. But as you struggle through it you will get to know that not everything is as beautiful as you think. That attachment of your towards that thing made it look beautiful for you as during that time you just neglect those other things or feelings that may make it look bad to you. And that's where attachment fools you and that's exactly how detachment changes your way of thinking. It just lets you see everything with the perspective of equal value.

Detachment might make you someone whom people usually call a man with no emotions but that's exactly the opposite of it. Detachment lets you know the exact facts about how to use your emotional intelligence in every situation. As from my personal experience I've seen many things that I knew were never mine yet I got attached to them and in the end, it was only me and myself. That's when I realized that I somehow have such kind of intuition about it, which helped me to predict all those events in some way.

During my experience, I was complimented with the words like "In the middle of my chaos, there was you" yet all I got in return was the chaotic life and a lesson to learn why detachment is important to learn and how to integrate it with your intuition so that you can save yourself from a chaotic situation.

That was the time I knew that getting attached to something is a virtue but to know how to detach yourself from it is still a blessing, that I suggest everyone should have.

I really like the Buddhist concepts of attachment and detachment... as in.... we really should try *not* to be attached (in the *fully committed* way because 'all things are temporary'. There's a real fundamental truth in that and to mature, we need to face that fact.

I don't know whether you are talking about detachment in a different way tho. I've known people who use detachment as a tool of oppression-of-others... as a tool of power-play.

In its purest sense tho.... (and for me, that's the Buddhist reading of the word).... it's more of a recognition.. that all things.... are temporary.... even the things we love... all of it... but that... we shouldn't necessarily be freaked out and depressed by this fact.... because.... that's just how things are... neither good...nor bad... just falling away... and rising... falling away etc..

But as a purposeful (kind of spiteful) psychological strategy... I reckon it does more damage to the gamer than to the object of their game..

Very thought provoking post. thank you for writing about it.
