OUR DEEP GUILT

ISIS Forces Last Iraqi Christians to Flee Mosul - The New York Times

All across the Nineveh plain the lights have gone out
Crosses driven into the hearts of the last of Mesopotamia’s
Christians. These Assyrians, speaking Aramaic, the language
Of Christ, have been loyal throughout the long centuries
Of subjection to the burning wind that came out of Arabia.
Now in Christian villages there are no girls left. All taken.
For the earth and the heavens have fled with the Americans.
And this is now the time of the second death.
No weasel words here, no turning of the cheek,
No meek, no mild, no gut-wrenchingly weak.
“Maaloula is the wound of Christ,” the mourners chant
In the last Christian stronghold in Syria.  Jihadist al-Nusra Front
Stormed this city: destroying statues of the mother of Christ,
Taking delight in defecating in the churches. Stripping monks
Raping nuns. Decapitating some. Crucifying others.
Whilst we, in the rich apathetic west, look on:
Cowardly, counting coin, afraid to face the sun.
Like the Roman Empire, we don’t deserve to survive.

Thank you Uilleam & Jennifer, I do not imply that you or I have a personal responsibility for what has happened to the Christians of the Middle East. But I do think that as members of society we do have a responsibility to educate ourselves and put pressure on our governments to act in defence of a persecuted people.

The genocidal persecution of Assyrian Christians has a long history. As non-Muslims (kafirs) they were treated (at best) as inferiors who paid jizyah (a special tax on non-Muslims). There were often sporadic massacres of Assyrians which culminated in the Ottoman empire's genocide of all (estimated at 4.5 million) non-Muslims (Greeks, Armenians, and Assyrians). The persecution of the few remaining Assyrians intensified again with the rise of Daesh (ISIS). Soon, all non-Muslims will have been killed or driven out. And the west does nothing. PS I am not a Christian.

Not my guilt.

Those responsible for carrying out such atrocities are guilty.

Those in high places who profitted from conniving with the perpetrators are guilty.

Those in positions of power and influence who turned a blind eye are guilty.
