Solitude & Silence
Solitude & Silence
Those times of solitude and silence become an oasis.
To retreat from noise and strife renews my life.
They refresh the soul and cleanse the mind.
Space is found in which to contemplate and be at peace.
I banish noise by unplugging all electrical appliances.
No telephone, no computer or radio can interrupt.
This is my sacred space.
These periods of solitude with silence become my refuge and haven.
Time to be away, withdrawn from a frenetic world.
I may stay at home or wander deep into the local countryside.
To be free, unattached and unencumbered of any baggage.
Distractions are removed, washed away for the time being.
Sometimes I may take my notebook with me for a poem or two.
Or my art box with which to paint or sketch.
Very occasionally music, carefully chosen, a tranquil melody for the soul.
But little else as it is my time and my space alone.
Favourite places are on my agenda where I cannot be found.
A rock, a promontory overlooking the vastness of the ocean.
Or a mountain stream surrounded by a tall pine forest.
Often at home with curtains drawn to give the impression that no one is in.
Then inspiration and original thoughts make their long awaited entry.
I take possession of these thoughts as I am transported to another realm.
I am fully alive, receptive and above all at peace.

Quiet times are important, Keith. Yesterday, I spent 20 minutes on a silent, near-empty train to Brussels, before being jolted out of my calm state by the raucousness of the metro.
Excellent poem.
