We Refuse to be Poor Anymore

Based on the words of Mick Lynch, leader of the Rail, Maritime, & Transport Workers Union. Also the words of one Richard Madeley. Written in rhyme royal format (ababbcc).

Mick Lynch, are you a Marxist,

   into revolution,

   and bringing down the capitalists?

No, I’m leading a dispute about working conditions,

and opening an interview with that, is a nonsense position.

Richard, you do come up with the most remarkable twaddle,

I’m not a Marxist, I’m an elected union official.

The working class is back,

let’s say it and cheer it: we refuse to be poor anymore.

We resist cuts, privatisation, and attacks

   on workers across the board,

many who carry out action they can’t afford.

Workers are underpaid and get no dignity,

but we’re an unstoppable force in this society.

Some think strike action isn’t the answer,

   but identify with the consequence.

But what is the answer?

Pray, play tiddlywinks, have a sponsored silence?

What is there to bring balance,

   when working people aren’t organised,

and libertarian nutters want workers marginalised.

We all know the conditions facing us right now,

   a rampant Tory government

oblivious to the harm they carry out.

Coupled with an opposition limited in judgement,

scared of its own shadow and useful commitment.

A cost-of-living crisis with no end in sight,

no one’s dealing with unless we organise and fight.

Hello John.
From the very first time I heard Mick Lynch speaking, the word "eloquence" came to mind.
He appears to put the fear of God into agenda driven, uncritical, cut and paste, fact-free so-called "journalists", with his cool and calm statement of facts, as opposed to the complete fictions presented to us as "news".

Thanks for the kind comments. Mick Lynch is someone who often comes across as a breath of fresh air among so many hopeless politicians. He's not afraid to speak truth, even if it means he will get stick for it.

Good poem, John, with the right message. I recently heard some nutter describing workers as a 'flexible resource'. If we go down the route of zero-hours contracts and the gig economy, the future is bleak indeed.

Thank you John.
I am Daniel Blake,
I am Cathy With no Home,
I refuse to be poor,
I refuse to be hungry,
I refuse to let my brothers and my sisters be poor and hungry.
