BEREFT

Some decisions:
reasonable, rational,
wipe out
sentimentality, lingering romance.
Time sends me spiralling back
leads me right back to a field
in high summer
in Cheshire, England
the road’s far enough away
to grant us silence
provisional, yes
passing, of course,
still silent, we share a look
Chris stares at me, as if deciding
something momentous,
I glance away from this man
I’ve known for decades,
since boyhood days,
so much laughter
we shared,
so many tears.
I didn’t know
until recently,
that he’d tried
twice before
to end his life
he’d hidden
that away from me
nor did I know
that this time
he would succeed
live & learn huh?

Thanks John.
How sad to have to deal with such a memory.
