I Want to Be that Old Woman
I want to be sturdy
like that tree
with the fat trunk,
I want my legs to be like that.
I want to be steady
like those leaves
that blow in the wind
but stay rooted to the branch,
I want my arms to be like that.
I want to be free
in my heart,
unburdened,
like those clouds that drift by
so puffy white,
I want my breath to be like that.
I want to smile
wide with the sky,
I want to hum
joyfully with the birds,
I want to be that sturdy
steady old woman
who walks through her day
in solid wonder.

Thank you all for your kind, encouraging words and likes! We keep on plodding along...doing the best we can with what we've got. Poetry is my aspirational prayer for internal and external peace--the latter is largely out of my control. Perhaps as an old lady I will find some of that "peace that passes understanding."
