The Fields of Avalon (pt 2 & 3)

entry picture

(Part 2)

The monsters find a way.

Those precious years that followed

Were summer fields of fragrant flowers

Where dreams, thought long forgotten

Had returned to fill the hours

We had a princess of our own

Kept the witch & the goblins at bay

For, if they knew we had an heir

They would, surely, take her away!

But, somehow, they found her Mother

Crawled into her breast & her blood

We fought with everything that we had

But, Camelot had fallen for good

The last time we went to the woods

The monsters all kept away

There was only the singing of birds

And the grass and the trees’ gentle sway

On the day the magic relinquished

We were holding your hand so tight

Our daughter in shudders of sorrow

My day turning permanent night

“Don't worry, my knight, I shall find

“that boat beneath the willow tree

“No rush to come seek me out

“For, I'll wait for all eternity…”

You slipped away

The magic had gone

But, the world had heard

Your beautiful song…

Many harsh winters did follow

Many days when dark replaced light

Many hours feeling so hollow

A place in shadow of night

Our daughter quickly grew older

And with each passing year became you

Adventurous, feisty & bolder

Her imagination helping us through

One day she came wielding a stick

“A tree bone! They say it is yours?”

My head started spinning around & around

The magic had opened new doors…

(Part 3)

Avalon.

Time has eaten away at the years

And, suddenly, I've become old!

Our daughter, is loving, thoughtful, & kind

I'm so proud she's of the same mould

She has a princess & knights of her own

What a joy when they come to call!

There's many a witch, or goblin to slay!

And, still, I get caught in the thrall!

But, my days are now shallow & numbered

The old witch has my neck in a noose

The hours become shorter & shorter

All the change in my pocket is loose

So, finally, at home I lay down

Surrounded by love & such tears

I whisper, I'll see them in Camelot

As my shallow breath now disappears

Suddenly, I'm back in the woods

Being caressed by a tickle of breeze

Grass swaying to the singing of birds

Leaves fluttering down from the trees

From below I hear a whistling

There's a willow tree down there!

And in a shallow boat beneath

Shines her beautiful sun-kissed hair

We finally cross that old river

And amble around hand in hand

Through everything we ever were

To our very own promised land

We stop before a vibrant scene

Of colour & honey dew

But, still, it can never compare

To the beauty I found in you

Our youthful lips kiss once more

Breathing in the rosy air

Autonomous in a dreamy bliss

Our fate now stripping us bare

“We finally made it,” you whisper softly.

“To the place where we belong.”

And, we run like wild & feral things

Through the fields of Avalon.

Wonderful. A meld of the mythical, common-place and universal.
