Radix malorum est cupiditas
Tortured by how life could have been
the silent scream lifts her off her feet:
ill-luck, tough-times, bad-choices
some had the benefit of clergy
others that stability wrought by money.
She'd been brought up 'in care'
nobody cared for her like they did
their own kids;
flung from pillar to post
she had runaway - straight into the arms of evil-doers.
Many of the boys and girls she knew had given up
the ghost, suicides did not need social media
to persuade them of the cruelty of the world
nor did she need persuading
that money bought hope
clothes, food, friends.
We began by selling dope
moved onto higher things
but we were never free
of that yearning for another life
that is our simple bare necessity. .
