Salford

This is Salford, Manchester, where do I go?

Rain, wind sleet or snow?

This is Salford, Manchester, where do I go?

I’m lost in these streets

Im squashed by the cars

Im blocked by the buses

Trapped between the crowds, the herds of people

They risk their lives to gain a second

STOP!

Crazy people

The man has not turned green

You don’t stop for cars

Why would they stop for you?

A kid passes by, he’s ten or 9

He’s dressed and prepared for any crime

Wearing a black tracksuit he tries make eye contact

Soon as you do, its, “What the fuck are you looking at!?”

If your lucky he may let you go

But knowing Salford, he’s packing more than you know

I’m not painting all salfordians with the same brush

But certain ones make students scared to catch the bus

STOP!

Crazy people

You cant leave your house after dark!

You’ll end up like that student on peel park!

This is Salford, Manchester, where shouldn’t I go?

Hoodies and students, its war you know?

This is Salford, Manchester where should I go?

Hi Richard - I was a policeman in Salford throughout the 1990's. It's nice to see that the city is as intimidating now as it was then!
In my time there, I was threatened with knives and just about every utensil you can think of. The favourite reception gift would be tins of beans or peas thrown from the upper floors of the tower blocks. Some would hit the police van but thankfully none hit me. I would never have lived the news headline down. 'Police Officer killed by Spaghetti Hoops'. The shame of it.

Richard

I see the chaos on the streets, and the madness where there are so many people, then the kid ready to do something wrong. So much reality expressed in your writing. It sounds like I was there watching the very scene at present time.

Great poem!
