This Morning
You like cinnamon in your coffee,
sometimes I forget to add it
to the piles of fresh grounds
in the coffee maker,
but this morning
my mind was clear
and the sweet smell of cinnamon filled my senses
as I puttered in the early light
of the quiet kitchen.
Cinnamon in coffee is like
icing on cake,
gravy on potatoes,
whipped cream on an ice cream shake--
not essential
but wonderfully delectable.
Little things can lift us up--
a smile, a wink, a pat, a kind word.
Remember this,
not all great things must be lofty,
little baby steps create joy--
like the enthusiasm when we cheer a baby's first step--
yay!
I remembered to put cinnamon in your coffee this morning, my love, yay!

The grand gestures are often compensations. It's the sustained practice of the little things which endures and show's that we care.
This poem is a fine reminder of the importance of small heartfelt offerings.
