Salt & Sea
It's a lesson to learn, something about our love.
With all the past I've explored, it's no wonder it feels this tough.
Cause we once walked together, now we walk away.
It takes a man to see his mistakes, is something I oughta say.
The man I could be, was something you tried to frame.
But I never changed you, I liked just how you came.
The sun gliding off your hair, your smile, so unaware.
I would fall in an instant, but still kept a distance, to make sure you weren't fake.
Till I got the nerve, to ask for a name.
When you spoke its existence, it was no longer interest, but persistence that made me say…
“Let’s go see the waves.”
Look, I know the shores uneasy and the water splashes like graffiti.
But if you can trust me freely, I promise you'll wanna stay.
And you did.
And I got to see you pray.
Along the coast of past memories contained.
Sending souls that up and left you, to a better place maintained.
And I couldn't relate.
I felt inclined to stray, watching you wander grain to grain.
You brought everything you had,
saddled in a lover's arms.
And the tears fell beneath you,
Just like the plasma from a Saturn star.
It's a lesson you learned, something about our love.
With all the past you've made peace with, it's no wonder it feels this tough.
Cause we once walked together, now we walk away.
It's something holding you back, was what you wanted to say.
The woman you could be, was something they tried to frame.
But I never changed you, I liked just how you came.
The daisy tucked by your ear, your laugh, so sincere.
How often you would listen to the thoughts of other victims, but still kept a distance, to make sure they wouldn't hear.
Cause if somebody noticed you, then everything would shatter.
The barrier you crafted, made it easy enough to package.
All of those worries that were holding you in pattern.
But I saw you.
You turned to face me, with a look so brave it never needed safety.
A wandering excitement, with a face so bold and pasty.
You let your guard down, maybe this was a first.
But then you saw the waves, you smiled, still it hurt.
Picturing the memories, the mistakes of your past.
You tried to cry in secret, but letting go felt decent.
You owed it to yourself, how you never let them reach it.
The best parts of your heart, those were only for the sweetest.
And then you looked my way, it never changes to this day.
You were holding up the world, and I was standing at the gate.
