BATTLE OF THE MOURNERS

Competitive grief
Battle of the mourners
Following my feature set,
where I read poetry
that I had written
about my Mum’s recent passing,
this guy later took the mic and shouted,
‘BIG UP ALL THE DEAD MUMS!
My Mum died years before your Mum, Lee.
I WIN!'.
As he bathed in mourning glory,
and me imagining him drowning in his own sick,
this woman, like the rest of us in the audience,
thinking how can anyone be
such an insensitive f*cking prick,
shouted back, ‘IT'S NOT A COMPETITION!
Grief is not a contest. No one wins!’
His mother would have been so proud of him.
