you had decided Captain

not to be any kind of

a burden to the others anymore

 

your sacrificial story tells

of your walk towards death

and how your heroically disappearing figure

had probably been swallowed up in seconds

whited out by the howling raging blizzard

 

doubtlessly you wouldn't have lived long enough

to have known

but it is likely that

inspirationally boosted by your gallant decision

who can say other

than they your very brave colleagues

how much more acceptable and fitting 

it would have been for them

to have passed away in a sleep of patriotic pride

despite being deprived of victory
